What a first day. I arrived bright and early, ready for anything. I saw the madness of the teachers' room at 8:45. I learnt everybody's names, then I forgot them again. Then I met the students, then the reception team, then the people in the cafe. In the morning I had been nervous, by lunchtime I was running around like a madman, at the end of the day I was exhausted. I felt like I'd been there for a month, and yet the day had passed so quickly I couldn't remember if I'd eaten anything! So, hungry, thirsty and tired, a group of teachers gathered outside the school at the end of the day, ready to blindly follow Bernard, the pied piper of Holborn, to wherever he was going. Nobody knew what Mr Dodds had up his sleeve, and as he led us into the basement of a backstreet Catholic Church in Liverpool Street, there were a few worried looks on faces. However, after a few glasses of wine and some nano-burgers, the intrepid EC staff soon relaxed and listened to the task that lay ahead of them, which was to prepare, cook and serve a gourmet three-course meal for over 25 people, in an hour. The Menu:Starter - Roasted Onion & Goats Cheese TartMain - Lamb Rump with Salsa Verde, Roast Potatoes and French BeansDessert - Chocolate TorteIt probably sounds a lot harder than it was, because all we had to do was to copy our chefs, who were very patient, very nice, nothing like Gordon Ramsey. As we sat down to eat, it was clear that we had made a masterpiece. Succulent meat, spicy salsa verde, delicious goats cheese tart, and one or two glasses of wine...All in all, it was a great evening, a great way to meet the teachers, and what a way to end my first day! Let's just say Tuesday was harder!
