A colourful crowd flocked the streets of St. Julians last night as EC Malta students made their way to Qube to dance the night away in colourful masks and international costumes. Surely a Carnival to remember for all EC students this 2009!

Definately a good turn out for EC Malta‘s yearly Traffic Light Party! Upon entering students were give a sticker to show their status: Green to show that they were available and searching for love; Orange was given to those that were not sure; and Red for those happily committed and therefore were considered to be out of the dating game.
Did our students have a great time? Well the pictures below say it all… have a look and let us know what you think! Remember to grab a copy of our weekly programme if you want to be sure you’re not missing out on the EC fun!!!

Did you know that The Manchester United Supporters’ Club on the tiny island of Malta is officially recognised by Manchester United Football Club as the oldest Manchester United supporters club in the world? Yep! The Club was founded in 1959 by John Calleja, the year following the Munich tragedy. This year the club has celebrated its 50th Anniversary in style together with Club Manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Captain Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes at the Mediterranean Conference Centere. Earlier that day Sir Alex Ferguson was walking right outside the school when he “bumped” into Matthew from the Customer Relations Department who kindly directed him to one of the local pubs. Word soon spread and many other EC Malta staff members and students “bumped” into him while at the pub! Surely a memorable day for our EC football fans!

Traditionally the revelry of Carnival kicks off a few days before the beginning of Lent (a religious ritual signifying the 40 days of preparation before Easter – The Resurrection of Jesus Christ). This year carnival will be held during the weekend of the 20th-22nd February, where most children and adults alike flock in lavish and silly costumes to the Capital City of Valletta. Get ready to let your hair lose and join the fun! Malta’s traditional Carnival is a treat alike for the Island’s inhabitants and for the ever increasing number of tourists. This three day festivity was introduced in Malta 1535 under Grand Master Pietro Del Ponte; five years after the Knights took over the Island. The main celebration takes place in the capital, Valletta, but in every town and village locals dress up in colourful clothes to camouflage their identity. The Valletta parade is very spectacular, including King Carnival followed by many floats and performers of a high professional standard. During the times of the Knights Auberges remained open and were delightfully decorated and until recently it was custom to burn King Carnival on the last day of the festivities. Nowadays many establishments also organise costume parties, dances and masked balls.

How are you going to spend Carnival this year?!?!

1. Join the EC  Malta Carnival Party on Wednesday 18th February at Qube – Costume is a must!

2. The EC party will continue on Thursday 19th February at Fuego where we will listen to the sounds of Rio de Janeiro

3. Then join the locals who traditionally flock to the sister island of Gozo on Saturday Night and join the macabre and grotesque Street Parade of Nadur which takes place throughout the night. Don’t forget your scary masks!

4. And finally head towards the Capital City of Valletta to see our colourful street parade with huge, vivid floats and lively dancers and performers.

Don’t miss out on the fun…

EC Malta is currently acting as Host Organisation for Twin UK and the Leonardo Da Vinci Compass Programme.
David Ncube, one of our first participants, shares his experience…
“The Leonardo Da Vinci programme was an absolute joy! I thoroughly enjoyed it! It brightened my days and reddened my already sun-tarnished cheeks! I felt exceptionally lucky too that I got to escape the dreadful British winter!

In my job assisting the CEOs of Write Me Anything.com & Travel Contacts, I got to go on television sets, attend meetings with renowned architects, carry out invaluable research and update the company’s impressive database. The highlight for me though was finally becoming a published writer… for the prestigious Maltese version of U.K. Times newspaper too! Four times! A dream come true for me… since prior to Malta, and for many years, I had been struggling as a raconteur.

I would highly recommend this programme to anyone wanting to experience a new culture while updating their resume and making lasting friendships through EC school. It’s a shame only a select few will get to be interns for Write Me Anything.com & Travel Contacts… for the hospitality, sincerity and kind-heartedness of the business-minded family behind these two companies was astounding, inspiring and most undoubtedly deserves a special mention.

Lastly, I have decided to stay in this beautiful, smile-widening island a few more months… in the hope of dousing myself in the friendships and business allies I have been blessed with.
Sincerely, a satisfied intern…
David Ncube”

Many Asian countries celebrate the New Year according to their own calendar and this year it was celebrated on the 24th of January. As an International English Language School, EC also joined in the celebrations and organised a great Korean New Year party for all the EC Malta staff and students. All those born in the year of the Ox got a personalised invitation for the event which took place on Tuesday 27th January. The aim of this event was also to promote and experience the Korean culture! The Event was organised by staff and students alike. Our Korean students helped by cooking some traditional dishes and many other students from around the world took part by designing posters and prepared presentations. All those present were taught the numerical count down in Korean, and wrote their name in Korean Calligraphy with a special brush and ink. cimg1022cimg10101cimg10131cimg1016cimg1018cimg1019cimg1011
