When you think of school, you think of  boring lessons with teachers that let you fall asleep?

Not with EC San Diego!

Today we caught our two teachers Doug and Alec playing with the guitars for Marshall Jeong (Chang Won Jeong), who was singing a popular pop song in front of the class. Marshall is the lead singer of his cover band in Korea, where they have already performed several times.

Wow! At EC San Diego, “school” is different. You enjoy living and learning with students from all over the world within an American environment.

An experience you will never forget!

Recipe for a Perfect Day

With its great weather, miles of sandy beaches, and major attractions, San Diego is known worldwide as one of the best tourist destinations. After studying in the beautiful area of La Jolla, many exciting attractions are waiting for you in San Diego. Rent a car together with your friends for a day over the weekend and discover many different parts of the city:

You can start your Saturday morning with a delicious American breakfast at “The Cottage” (http://www.cottagelajolla.com/breakfast.html) in La Jolla. After all the good food you can stroll down La Jolla’s Coast Boulevard, watching seals taking their morning sun-bath.

Then head south and enjoy the next couple hours with your friends under the Californian sun at Mission Beach (http://g.co/maps/utv6g). The high waves of the Pacific Ocean and miles of picture perfect sandy beaches are waiting for you here.

How does a good American burger sound to you afterwards? On your way to our next attraction, the Cabrillo National Monument at Point Loma, you can make a stop at IN-N-OUT Burger (http://www.in-n-out.com/secretmenu.asp) at Sports Arena Boulevard (http://g.co/maps/58s32). Do not miss to stop by and enjoy one of their tasty meals!

After your break you are well prepared to drive further to Cabrillo National Monument (http://www.nps.gov/cabr/index.htm). From here you will experience an unforgettable view of the entire city, down San Diego’s coast, all the way to Mexico! If you are interested in history, you should not have a look at the exhibit on the monument itself. Learn more about the city’s past and Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who set his foot as the first European on what is now the West Coast of the United States. At the entrance of the National Park you have to pay a fee of $5, but your ticket is valid for one week and we highly recommend you to come back one night and watch the beautiful sunset from here.

Now it’s time to drive into the city and visit Balboa Park (http://www.balboapark.org) – the green oasis within San Diego. The entire Balboa Park is a primary attraction in the region. The park’s landscape has many trees and groves creating an urban forest for San Diego. Besides its nice gardens and walking paths, it contains a variety of cultural attractions including many museums, several theaters, and the world famous San Diego Zoo (http://www.sandiegozoo.org).

After all this excitement, you should reward yourself with a nice dinner. It’s time to try the great Mexican food at Casa Guadalajara (http://www.casaguadalajara.com) in Old Town. If you drive along the water, you will be able to see the huge aircraft carrier, USS Midway (http://www.midway.org), on your left hand side. From here it is not far to Old Town. We recommend you try Casa Guadalajara’s “Especial de la Casa”, a mixed plate with the best Mexican food.

For a perfect end of the day you should watch San Diego’s beautiful sunset at Coronado Island. The beach in front of its famous hotel “Hotel del Coronado” (http://g.co/maps/dwdhu) is one of the softest sandy beaches in San Diego. Bring your towels or a frisbee and enjoy after your exciting day the amazing lighting of the beautiful Californian sunset!

–B-Ball in PB–

One great way to learn English is to play sports.  We are lucky here at EC San Diego because we can play all year in our fantastic So Cal weather!  Through teamwork, students get to practice vocabulary and grammar in a fun, relaxed setting.

Try to answer the following basketball questions:

  • What nickname do Americans give to the ring of basketball?
  • How long is a basketball game?
  • Who do you think is the number one star player in the NBA?
  • Are there any basketball players from your country in the NBA?
  • What other sports use a court to play on?
  • What is your favorite team?

Welcome Back Anja!

Our former intern, Anja, has just returned to us after completing her studies in Europe!  She was gone for the summer, but we are very excited to have her back for a whole year this time!  She will be taking over as the Student Services Advisor for EC San Diego.  Here is a short bio:

Anja was born in Berlin, but moved from place to place within Germany during school. After high school she went to the Netherlands to study International Marketing.  During her studies, she had the opportunity to study abroad in South Korea and Spain.  She gained so many interesting experiences and got to know people from all over the world.  This lead her to the world of international education and, eventually, right back to us here at EC San Diego!  We are happy to welcome her back and look forward to a wonderful academic year ahead!

Enjoying the sunny San Diego weather!

“Don’t cry because it’s over,

Smile because it happened!”

Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American writer, poet, and cartoonist most widely known for his children’s books written under the pen name Dr. Seuss.  In our American Culture class, students are reading his books as a fun way to improve their English.

If you want to pronounce the name the way his family did, say Zoice, not Soose. Seuss is a Bavarian name, and was his mother’s maiden name: Henrietta Seuss’s parents emigrated from Bavaria (part of South Germany) in the nineteenth century. Seuss was also his middle name.

He published 46 children’s books, which were often characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of trisyllabic meter. His most celebrated books include the bestselling “Green Eggs and Ham”, “The Cat in the Hat”, and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”; the latter of which was adapted into a musical that is performed every year in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park.

Numerous adaptations of his work have been created, including 11 television specials; three feature films, a Broadway musical and four television series. He won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for “Horton Hatches the Egg” and again in 1961 for “And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street”.

He came to call La Jolla his home later in life.  His house sits near the school at the very top of Mount Soledad looking down on all of La Jolla, with 270-degree views of the Pacific. Dr. Seuss passed away in 1991, but his widow Audrey Geisel still lives in this house high atop the world.

*San Diego in September*

Welcome to the month of September!  Not only is the start of the fall season, it is also a month packed with activities and excitement!  It is the start of a new school year, so the city fills with university students from all over.  The weather starts to get a bit cooler at night, so beach bonfires become increasingly popular.  It is one of the best months for weather in San Diego as it hardly ever rains and is mostly sunny.

Some activities continuing in the month of September are the Del Mar Races, Concerts by the Bay and open air Shakespeare plays at Balboa Park.  Fleet week also happens this month in celebration of San Diego’s service men and women.  It concludes with an amazing air show in October!  Some other items to note: starting September 15th, The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be playing at the Old Globe Theater for a limited time.  And Restaurant Week is the 18th-23rd, featuring discounted prix fixe menus at over 180 of San Diego’s finest restaurants.

EC San Diego will be enjoying all that September has to offer with excursions to such things as the Fleet Week Festival and a San Diego Chargers game!  Come to the front desk for more details on San Diego activities, whether or not it is on the calendar.  And remember: participating in activities and getting involved with the community is a fantastic way to practice and improve your English language skills!
