Memorial Day is one of the most important holidays in the U.S. Observed annually every last Monday of May, people usually take time off from their work and other activities to reflect on the significance of this celebration.

Why do we celebrate Memorial Day here in the U.S.?

The primary reason why people celebrate this special event is to remember the lives of U.S. soldiers and other military personnel who sacrificed their lives and died in honor of their country. Today, the entire country celebrates this event to honor all the Americans who have died while taking part in any kind of military action or war.

People usually visit memorials and cemeteries in observance of this very special day. Every 3PM of this day, the whole country holds a national moment of rememberance. May people also spend this time with their families and friends. Together, they cook and eat barbecues while enjoying the presence of one another.

Have a safe weekend.

Through a recently formed partnership with EC San Diego, La Jolla and Casa De Manana, a front porch retirement community in La Jolla, we now have students present their cultures once a month to the community residents.  We also allow 2 teachers to bring their classes to watch the presentations which are then followed by in-class activities.  The presentations include a powerpoint that the students have developed along with pictures on what they are presenting.  They start by introducing themselves along with some other biographical information.  They then go in subtopics about their country such as; food, culture, religion, politics, economics, major exports, human rights and so much more.  The presentations last for about 40 minutes followed by questions and answers. Check out some of the photos from a special dinner that was held last night.

Our next presentation will be held at 3pm on Thursday, May 24th. To find out about how you can participate please talk to teacher Daniel.

Cinco de Mayo at EC

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “Fifth of May) is celebrated in Mexico. It is a day that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, and so it represents a celebration of freedom and liberty. Mexican Independence Day is September 16th, which is when they beat the Spanish in 1821.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo has become increasingly popular along the U.S. Mexico border and in parts of the U.S. that have a high population of people of Mexican heritage. In these areas the holiday is a celebration of Mexican culture, food, music, beverages and customs unique to Mexico.

Here at school we celebrated Cinco de Mayo with Mexican food, games and music at lunchtime. It was a lot of fun and a lot of our students enjoyed it. Take a look at the photos!
