Swedish traditions are weird

Sharing is caring!

Since I’m Swedish I thought it would be fun to share some Swedish facts and traditions with you. Going to the swe not swiEC Brighton Language School doesn’t only mean that you’ll learn a lot about the English culture, you’ll meet people from the whole world and you’ll hear things about different countries that you’ve never heard before.

First of all, Sweden is not Switzerland. Sweden is in the north of Europe and is a part of Scandinavia. We have our own language that is very similar to Norwegian and Danish and we have our own currency even though we are a part of the EU. Education and healthcare are just a few of all things that are free in Sweden, because of our high taxes. Our country is big but almost everyone lives in the lower half of Sweden, up in the north it’s very cold and -35 Celsius is common during the winter.

Midsommar
Basically, we are celebrating it’s the mid of the summer and we do this by wearing a crown made of flowers on our heads, dancing around the midsummer pole. While we are dancing around the pole we sing and imitate small frogs jumping around. This tradition also contains a lot of food and alcohol and is celebrated all over the country by almost every family since it isn’t connected to religion.

Kräftskiva
This is a tradition to celebrate that the crayfish season is on again. We drink a lot of snaps (strong liquor) and we also sing a short song before we take a snaps. The songs we sing before every snaps is usually a child song remodeled with a lyrics about alcohol and crayfishes. Then we eat a lot of shellfish and have a good time. Usually we decorate with paper figures in the room and we also wear small hats on our heads.
