Speak / Tell

Speak and talk pretty much mean the same thing. Speak is more formal than talk e.g. You may speak to a business client and talk to a friend.

When we're giving someone instructions or information we use tell: "He told me how to use this software.";"She told me what happened at the meeting." - Notice that tell is used with a person (personal object): "told me" or, for another example "Tell him where you put the file."

When we use say we do not use a personal object: "He said he was tired" NOT, "He said me he was tired"

thanks
