Visitors to the island often think that Malta is a beach, sun and sea resort destination, but there is an amazing amount of unique, cultural heritage here.

You don't have to be a fan of the past to appreciate the elegance and splendour of Malta's 'modern' baroque capital, the Unesco World Heritage city of Valletta, or the quiet beauty of its old medieval capital, the walled city of Mdina, perched high on its bastions.

Wherever you go on the island, the baroque palaces, bastions, seascapes, craggy landscapes, cliffs and lively towns all make for a wonderful backdrop to your stay. A good way to view the capital and the coastline is to take a boat trip either round the two natural harbours or a longer, half or full day-trip round the islands. Malta's sister island Gozo has a very different, more rural and quieter atmosphere and is an ideal day trip at a weekend.

Apart from the prehistoric sites and baroque legacy of the Knights of St John, Malta has fascinating, fun and colourful spectacles to visit which are part of island life today.

A real treat, if you can get up early enough, is the regular Sunday morning fish market at Marsaxlokk. In summer, don't miss a town or village festa complete with its spectacular fireworks display, religious procession and, of course, fun-filled, late night atmosphere of the village piazza.

At EC, our leisure programmes often take in a summer festa, and offer boat trips or Gozo excursions. Be sure to ask the EC Customer Relations team for a weekly programme.
