The University of Cambridge ESOL was established in 1858 to set a standard of efficiency for schools in Britain. Today, Cambridge ESOL provides an assessment service at five levels of English as a Foreign Language.
Among the many multinational companies that recognise Cambridge ESOL certificates for employment purposes are Asea Brown Boveri, Canon, Hoeschst, Lloyds Bank, Nestlé, Price Waterhouse, Shell and Xerox.
The Cambridge English: Preliminary (PET) is an intermediate level qualification in English. The Cambridge English: First (FCE) is the most widely-recognised proof of language ability at the upper-intermediate level. The Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) is popular as an assessment of advanced abilities. The Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) represents a very high level of language ability and is recognised as meeting English language entrance requirements by many universities in English-speaking countries.

Facts
- Minimum Level: PET, FCE, CAE: Intermediate (intermediate level students must take 12 week course; students with higher level may take a 8 or 4 week
course dependent on level)
CPE: Advanced level (students must take a 12 week course) - 25 lessons per week = 55 minutes
- Course Duration: Minimum 1 week (depending on number of lessons chosen)
- 1 lesson = 55 minutes
