When you’re studying English abroad with EC, there are loads of opportunities for you to improve your skills and meet some of the lovely locals in your chosen destination. EC San Diego and EC Boston recently launched their awesome Conversation Partner Programme, a fantastic initiative that brings together students and local senior citizens to spend some time together, have a chat, and share some of their best stories.
What is the Conversation Partner Programme?
Students at our Boston and San Diego schools are invited to local retirement communities each month to meet older Americans and share stories and conversation about their backgrounds, interests, and cultures. This allows students to not only build relationships with native English speakers, but also to practise their speaking skills while helping the community by keeping the elderly company! It doesn’t matter what level of English you are at, this amazing opportunity is open to students enrolled in any course and of any level of English.
It’s easy to sign up for these visits, just watch out for volunteer opportunities in the weekly announcements at school. Then simply visit the front desk of your school and inform the staff that you are interested in going to volunteer at the retirement community. Trips are organised once per month and each visit lasts approximately one hour.
Which homes do students visit?
EC San Diego students volunteer at Casa de Manana, an award-winning retirement home located in the heart of La Jolla, stunning suburb of San Diego.
Students studying at EC Boston have the opportunity to volunteer at Hale House, a care-focused community in the centre of Boston.
