5 Tips for Making Friends Abroad

Sharing is caring!

Getting ready to study English abroad can be a stressful experience. From packing to preparing to say goodbye to your family and friends, there is a lot to take care of before you leave. Try out our tips for making new friends to give you one thing less to stress about!

1 | Go to your orientation events

You might think they are boring, but welcome events are the best time to meet new people. During the first few days, everyone will be forming friendships as they get to know each other, so it’s the perfect time to find your own social circle.

2 | Pick out one person to befriend in each of your classes

During your first few days, check out people in your classes and see who you could imagine yourself being friends with. You can make an effort to sit close to them, or speak to them between classes. This way you will have someone to hang out with in every class!

3 | Talk, talk, talk

Don’t be scared to speak to anyone. Be brave, the more chances you take to speak to people, the more opportunities you will have to make friends.

4 | Explore your city

Going to activities you are interested in means you will meet people you already have something in common with. Join acitivites on your school’s social calendar, but also don’t be afraid to explore your local area. This is a great way to expand your network of friends and also to meet native English speakers!

5 | Be open

To new people and new experiences. You’ll get the most out of your study abroad experience if you are willing to go on new adventures!
