Tomorrow, it’s the summer solstice! We’re going to have the longest day of daylight, which marks the beginning of summer!
Here are a few solstice facts:
Solstice comes from the Latin words, ‘sol’ (sun) and ‘sistit’ (stands).
The summer solstice can occur on different days (the 20th or 21st of June) because of the difference between our 365-day year and the 265.25-day astronomical year.
Have you heard of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’? It’s one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays and is a tale of love, magic, comedy and fairies which takes place at midsummer.
Thousands of people go to Stonehenge, an ancient prehistoric site and place of worship, to celebrate. The sun rises behind one of the main stones!
It was originally a pagan festival of life, fertility and harvest and was celebrated with outdoor feasts, singing and dancing.
The winter solstice is on the 21st or 22nd of December – the shortest day, so let’s make the most of our summer!
