At least as far as the U.K goes, Brighton is one of the biggest centres for street art and graffiti.
Take a short walk around most areas of Brighton, chances are you’ll see some graffiti. We’re not talking about amateur signatures from teenagers (although we have those too). But high quality, often commissioned street art by renowned artists. With so many alleys, access roads and large exposed building walls, there is a lot of canvas for street artists. The Brighton Graffiti scene is closely linked to London, after all, it’s just an hour journey by train. For years artists from Brighton have travelled to London and vice versa. Both Brighton and London Graffiti are distinct, but they have evolved together in many ways. London has become sanitized and controlled, while Brighton like Bristol, in the most part remains untamed. As a result the art is less accessible to the more general public, it’s audience is the graffiti writers and urban art connoisseurs who have maintained a grip on the city’s scene. With the exception of a few murals which might have been commissioned, the majority of the work on display throughout the city is lettering and throw ups. If you’re taking Brighton School of English, take some time to explore the city as an urban exhibition. Take a walk and see if you can find some of these incredible artworks; (Credit goes to Inspiring City for compiling the photographs)
