Mothers day is celebrated on different days around the world, but in the U.K. It’s mothers day on Sunday, the day in which we celebrate motherhood in all its forms. Although traditions celebrating motherhood have occurred for thousands of years, the celebration of mothers dates back to 1908. This was when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her mother at St. Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. This church now holds the International Mothers Day Shrine.
Ann Jarvis was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed that they were “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”. So on Sunday we will thank our mothers we kindness and gifts, for all that they have done for us. And our thoughts go out to those mothers without their children and those without their mothers.
