“On Thursday 13 January I joined our group from Brazil on a tour to Robben Island. It was unforgettable to say the least! After a tour of the island- which is today a World Heritage Site- we heard about life in prison from someone who’d served a sentence there. We were also, of course, taken to Nelson Mandela’s cell where he’d spent 18 years. Since opening to the public in 1997, Robben Island has become a focal point of South African heritage and I’m sure the students learnt a lot about South African history.
Besides being informative, the trip also offered the most beautiful views across the bay of Cape Town and Table Mountain and the boat trip back was exhilarating as the late afternoon swells left us all refreshed – and a few of us drenched with water!”
