Monday 11th June will see the launch of the much anticipated Media Studies Elective course. The course will target media in communication, from the traditional paper and broadcast variety to the still emerging digital/online and social media. The effects of advertising will also be analysed and other focus areas include the effect and influence of language and discourse on variopus aspects of life and society. Students will take on the role of being the “observer” of media encouraging the active use of their listening and reading (receptive skills) but will also be “practitioners” through their production (speaking and writing skills) of English. The main aim is to sharpen fundamental skills as well as develop and fine-tune the functional use of English and application of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation through meaningful and engaging contexts.
The course, which promotes project-based and collaborative learning, promises to take students on an inspiring journey through the wonderful and somewhat eclectic world of media. There will be projects such as class newspapers and blogs, webquesting, media excursions and much more.
Sheetal, the teacher who will be heading the course, in addition to being an inspiring TEFL teacher, majored in Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University. Sheetal’s contribution to national and international media include writing weekly Bollywood film and music reviews on iafrica.com and for East London’s “Daily Dispatch” where she reviewed weekly Bollywood films screened on SABC 3. She also wrote news, culture and lifestyle articles for “GO! & Express” and while in Canada ran a weekly travelogue column “Out of Africa” to keep her home-based readers in the loop of her adventures in Canada.
This elective course is open to GE/LT/AY30 students from Intermediate to Advanced levels. Please see Nicoletta if you are interested in joining this course.
Happy Studies!
