This morning, our Intermediate class held a very interesting debate. The notion was along the lines of, “Government is responsible and should pay to maintain minority languages in a country.”
The class was divided into two groups – one agreed with the notion, while the others opposed it. The debate became so heated, that we didn’t even notice time was up at the end of the lesson. There were a number of different points that were raised on this topic, but most of the class felt that responsibility lies with parents to maintain a (minority) language and if it is at risk of dying out, there’s a lot more to lose – like religion, cultural identity and so on.
Students worked so well in groups and each one expressed their opinion clearly and concisely. All in all, a great class!
