One of the perks of studying ESOL in London is that you can learn about and experience events that people in the UK celebrate. One such event is Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day, an annual televised charity event which will be taking place this Friday 13th March 2015.
In 1985, comedy writer Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry founded a charity to raise money for people in Ethiopia, with the aim of helping those who are poor or disadvantaged while also dealing with the causes of poverty and injustice. Working in the comedy industry, they planned on raising the money by encouraging people to do something funny for money.
On the day itself, the TV programme starts in the afternoon on the BBC and continues late into the night, with comedy sketches and shows with a number of celebrities joining in. Throughout the evening there are regular updates on how the fundraising is progressing.
So on Friday 13th March, EC London will be taking part in this charity event to raise money for Red Nose Day. A lot of the teachers and students will be encouraged to wear red clothes and during the day there will be:
- A cake competition during the break times
- A taboo competition in the student lounge
- Nail painting
For the cake competition, students and teachers are encouraged to bring something in and those buying the cakes can vote on their favourite. The winner will receive a prize.
Reception is also selling Red Noses for £1 each, with all the money going towards charity. And if you don’t want to wear a red nose but would like to contribute, we also have stickers you can buy instead.
So why not make a traditional dish from your country and take part in the cake competition this Friday? You never know, you just might win a prize! For more information about what is going on in the school on Friday, please ask at reception.
