Summer in Malta is well-known for its ‘festa’ season where individual towns and villages celebrate the feast of their patron saint or other saints revered in their local parish church. During a local ‘festa’, village and town streets are brightly decorated with colourful flags, festive pelmets, balloons and banners. Churches are festooned with decorations and illuminated with thousands of light bulbs. On the day of the feast, the Statue of the Patron Saint is taken round the streets in a procession accompanied by brass bands, multi-coloured fireworks and the peeling of church bells and cheers from the crowds. Locals and tourists alike look forward to these feasts as they are intimately linked with Malta’s folklore and history.
