This week, EC Montreal welcomed its first Young Learner group of the year! They are teenagers from Mexico and so excited to be here! As EC Montreal will be launching a new Young Learner’s programme this summer, we decided to pilot the programme with this group of students.
The students arrived this weekend and spent the weekend getting to know their homestay hosts! They were welcomed at the school on Monday and introduced to the school director and their teacher Jillian.
They were given maple treats to enjoy while they were hard at work on their placement test!
With the Young Learner programme, students learn in a warm and dynamic environment. Every week, the lessons revolve around a certain theme. The students work in pairs and groups with a variety of video resources.
Students develop strategies to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
They have an opportunity to practice the language in fun pair and group activities.
The students are taught to communicate the new language with great confidence.
After class, students eat lunch together and then go off on their afternoon activities. The activities offer a balance of sports, cultural, tourist attractions and workshops. This week the group will be spoiled with city tours, museum visits, a cupcake decorating workshop and an excursion to Quebec City on Sunday!
As this week’s theme is Creating a Nation, the after-school activities will include a movie night, an arts and crafts activity where students will create their own currency and a team-work activity of building marshmallow towers.
Next week’s theme is games and sports. The activities will include a sports themed movie, a team-work activity of inventing their own game and playing their game on Mount-Royal. Next week’s daily afternoon activities will be fun-filled with a ceramic café workshop, the Butterfly Go Free exhibit at the Botanical Gardens, a sushi making workshop and a hike up Mount-Royal!
On Friday, we will have a certificate ceremony with the group and give out prizes. We will also offer them a taste of Montreal where they will have a chance to sample our famous smoked meat and poutine!
We hope they will enjoy their Montreal language adventure!
