Being in New York is so exciting. There are so many things to do and so many people to talk to. If you’re a determined and outgoing student, you can easily talk to a dozen native English speakers a day, and improve your abilities by great margins.
But it’s important not to neglect some of the other academic skills, too.
Reading in particular can reap huge benefits. Even more than watching a movie or talking to a friend, reading exposes you to new vocabulary, and gives good modeling on language use, structure, style and vocabulary. It might feel like work at first, but before long your language is guaranteed to improve remarkably.
Reading is like a super food for your brain. The trick is to pick a book whose subject will hold your interest and keep you coming back through all the slow labor of the actual reading of it.
