This Monday, EC New York will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Junior Day. MLK’s actual birthday was January 15th, and the holiday is always celebrated on the third Monday of January each year.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American civil rights leader, activist, and important figure in American history who believed in civil disobedience as a form of nonviolent protest to the harsh inequality of African Americans prior to the 70’s. He was responsible for organizing the Montgomery Bus Boycott, as well as other crucial movements in the South to promote equality. Perhaps he is most famous for his “I Have a Dream” speech, which united 250,000 protesters to Washington DC. His charisma was inspirational and powerful. His assassination was an unfortunate turning point in history, and we honor his memory every year around the time of his birthday.
