We have a name for the baby Panda at the San Diego Zoo

Sharing is caring!

It is a big day at the Zoo today! We finally have the name chosen for the baby Panda that was born 100 days ago. By Chineses tradition, giant pandas are not named until they have been alive 100 days.

The public helped pick the name by choosing among the six options:

  • Qi Ji, which means Miracle;
  •  Yu Di, which means Raindrop;
  •  Da Hai, which means Big Ocean or Big Sea;
  • Xiao Liwu, which means Little Gift;
  • Yong Er, which means Brave Son; and
  • Shui Long, which means Water Dragon.

Nearly 75,000 votes were cast and the official name for its newest panda cub is

Xiao Liwu.

The mother, Bai Yun, who is almost 21 years old is the second oldest panda to have given birth at the Zoo. She has given birth to six cubs since she arrived  in San Diego back in 1996.
