Description of local area
The Dunkirk-Fredonia area has a population of 30,000, and Fredonia students find both outdoor recreational opportunities and the offerings of two village centers within a few minutes drive from campus.
Students are drawn to the downtown village area not only for the bar and nightlife scene but for many other great attractions right in town. Local cafés often have live entertainment in the form of bands, artists, and open mic nights. The Fredonia Opera House has everything from movie nights to live opera and theatre.
The region, home to Chautauqua Institution and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, is an hour from Niagara Falls and is a vacation destination for many interested in arts, cultural, and all-season recreation.
If you want to escape for a while, great hiking, golfing, skiing, fishing and boating are just minutes away from your busy life on campus.
Note: EC provides students with a meal card, issued by Fredonia, which is required for all students who are living on campus. The meal card provides students with credit for meals in dining facilities on campus, an average of 2 meals plus one light meal per day are budgeted for in the total sum credited at the beginning of their stay. The card is replenished every 4 weeks; however should students require more credit, they are free to top up their cards as required.
