Groundhog Day in America!

Sharing is caring!

Today, February 2 is Groundhog Day.  This holiday may seem strange to some, but has been celebrated in the US since the 18th Century!  The holiday began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries.  What is this holiday? According to tradition, the Groundhog (also known as Punxsutawney Phil) comes out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if it is a cloudy day he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate.  So, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow then it means 6 more weeks of winter!  If he does not see his shadow, then it means Spring is coming!  So what did Punxsutawney Phil say about 2011???  Spring is on its way!!
