Did you know that etymology is the study of the origin and history of words? Etymologies are not definitions of words that you find in a dictionary, but an explanation of where our words come from.

There is a free, comprehensive online etymology dictionary on the web right here.

For instance, did you know the English word tablet which meant a flat surface for an inscription was first recorded in the 14th century? That word comes from the 13th century Old French word tablete. People didn’t start referring to a tablet as a pill of medication until the 1580’s, and it wasn’t until 1880 that tablet came to mean a pad of paper to write on.
