EC student joins Yankees

When Colombian softballer, Juliana Forero Becera, came to EC Cape Town for one year to learn English, she contacted local team Westridge Yankees searching for a club to play with during her time at EC.  Julliana, who represents Colombia at international level, has been signed by the Yankees and will now combine her English language course with being a welcome member of one of the top clubs in the Western Province Softball Federation. This is how the story was covered in the local newspaper ‘People’s Post’: THE acquisition of a Colombian international softballer has boosted the ranks of the Westridge Yankees club in the Western Province Softball Federation. Juliana Forero Becera (20), who has three Colombian caps to her credit, represented her native country as a pitcher in the South American championships last season, Becera joined up with Yankees last week after coming to South Africa earlier this year to study English at the EC Language School in Cape Town. She says she contacted Yankees after checking the website to find a possible club to join during her yearlong stay in the city. Becera hails from the Colombian capital of Bogota and has experience of playing infield and outfield positions, too. “I needed to keep in touch with the game and play for a club in Cape Town. I should be fit enough to play after training with Yankees for a few weeks,” said Becera, after meeting Yankees’ head coach Lester Smith and his assistant Steven Rodkin at Turthall Stadium, Crawford on Saturday. Becera’s presence is expected to have a positive impact on the Yankees squad, which is determined to regain its top ranking in the WP Super League competitions. Yankees won no titles in the elite competition last season, when Falcons SAPS annexed the league championship and Glenthorn won … Read more

Teacher Testimonial – Danica Steyn

EC Cape Town is conveniently located in the heart of the city, with beautiful Table Mountain as the backdrop; it is a pulsating and professional school with animated colleagues and students from all over the world. I’ve been working here for eight months and it’s been both gruelling and very exciting! EC is like a well-oiled machine that operates smoothly and effectively and I am pleased to be part of the team. The efficiency of the administration staff is remarkable; from student affairs and academics to staff interaction and renovations! Our administration staff is doing an outstanding job of making things happen and keeping the school trendy and professional. Our DOS, Nicoletta Di Gia, is dynamic and hardworking. She is an excellent leader and visionary, transparent and approachable and she is always encouraging and challenging us teachers. I am confident and comfortable in her presence and it is great working with her. The rest of my colleagues are a fun and lively mixture of different cultures, personalities and characteristics. Comic relief is guaranteed upon entering our staff room! Apart from cracking jokes, we are always eager to help each other, offer advice or share lessons. We all get along well and it creates a warm and friendly working environment. The other noteworthy aspect of working at EC, is the fact that one is continuously surrounded by a combination of different nationalities. I enjoy working with and getting to know the students from all over the world. I’ve met wonderful people in these past few months and with the constant influx of new students classes are always interesting and fresh. Professionally I’ve grown a lot at EC by attending various workshops and learning from other teachers. I am constantly challenged and inspired to learn and further develop various skills and grow … Read more
