What’s on this week?

After two weeks of silence on the blog… Here we are again! First, I will introduce myself. My name is Merel Toornend, and for the next five months I will be giving you the updates from the EC Cape Town blog. I am doing my internship at EC Cape Town as part of my study in The Netherlands. I have been here now for two weeks, and I must say: the people are really friendly at EC, which helps me to adjust. I am very excited and really looking forward to explore EC and Cape Town! I will be in charge of the activities in and around Cape Town, so every week I will post the What’s on Guide on the blog as well. If you want to book an activity, don’t hesitate to contact me at school or by email (mereltoornend@ecenglish.com) The highlight of this week are two activities with teachers. Wednesday, you can join teacher Mark for a soccer game from 16:00 till 17:00. This game will be against another school. Don’t forget to sign up so we can make a team! To end the week in Capetonian style, there is a braai upcoming Friday. Join teacher Matthew and other EC students at 16:30. Make sure you bring some cash, because on the way to the beach you will buy some food to enjoy it together! See you around soon! Want to know more about English Courses in Cape Town? Spring Day at EC Cape Town 01 September 2014

With the month of Spring just around the corner, we at EC Cape Town are extremely excited to dust off our sandals and Spring outfits! Seeing all the pretty flowers start to bloom, with Lilies being one of my absolute favorites, I have to admit Sunny days over the cold and wet weather anytime! Another important aspect one needs to consider when stepping into the month of spring is the change of fruits which are being grown and produced, meaning one’s diet automatically has a slight shift – but a good one, all summer fruits are equally as delicious as the winter fruits. With that  being said it’s always a good idea to try and stay as healthy and fit as possible, thus our initiative to celebrate the start of Spring with an EC Cape Town Health Week! Our health week will start as of the 01 September, with loads of fun pictures that will be uploaded on our Facebook Page as well as right here, our EC Blog. Stay tuned for some health tips from teachers and EC Cape Town staff members, also for some funny and whack pictures that will surely make your Spring week fun!     __________________________________ Remember to follow us on Facebook or Twitter RELATED BLOG POSTS Happy Health Day at EC Cape Town Pitches for a New Fruit Juice

EC Cape Town Student Donates Book to Library

When students leave EC Cape Town, they don’t leave for good they always find themselves a month or two later back at EC visiting all the staff its like they are glued to our team! We in all honesty cannot blame them, we welcome each student, past and present with open arms into our family, we simply love seeing them smile and feeling at home. Below mentioned is one of our students that recently graduated from EC, he decided to make a last “pop-in”before leaving EC Cape Town and South Africa for his home land. Ahmed Bafgeesh, one of our students from Yemen that completed the Academic Year 30 Program, loved spending every spare minute he could in the Library. Reading is an important step for each of our students as this helps them to understand and build sentences. A day before leaving South Africa, ending 7 months with the EC family, he decided to come back to his home away from home and leave his mark, he did so by donating a book to one of his favorite places in the school, the library! Teacher Hardie Bosman, one of the teachers that assists students when renting out a book, gladly accepted and added his donation to our collection of books! Thank you Ahmed for your generous donation, we will surely miss you at EC Cape Town and we wish you all of the best of luck for your future endeavors! __________________________________ Remember to follow us on Facebook or Twitter RELATED BLOG POSTS English Language Students of EC Cape Town Share your #ECEXPERIENCE with our global community of EC English students

EC English Celebrates the Month of Ramadan

We at EC Cape Town, South Africa English School, would like to wish all students and staff celebrating the month of Ramadan a blessed and prosperous month ahead. Below is a short interpretation of the definition of Ramadan:   Ramadan is celebrated by the Muslim tradition, whereby Muslims spend a month in fast, the annual observance is most regarded as the Five Pillars of Islam. Throughout this very important and holy month, Muslims refrain from many among these are consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking and engaging in disagreements. Food and drinks are served daily this happens before sunrise and after sunset. According to Islam the Thawab (rewards) of fasting are plenty but throughout this month they are all being multiplied.   “May this Ramadan be as bright as ever and bring joy, health and wealth to you and your loved ones lives. May this Ramadan bring in you happiness and love you have ever wished for and the utmost in peace and prosperity. May light triumph over darkness and peace transcend the earth and the spirit of light illuminate the world. May the light that we celebrate at Ramadan show us the way and lead us together on the path of peace and social harmony AMEEN” – Zubeida Harris- Registrar at EC Cape Town   __________________________________ Remember to follow us on Facebook or Twitter   RELATED BLOG POSTS Living with a Host Family: Experiencing Ramadan Guided Homework Class Testimonials

True Love, by EC English student “Abo Korkmaz”

From Sheetal Makhan / Academic Year Coordinator Every now and then I come across a true gem. When Turkish student, Abdurrahim Korkmaz suddenly appeared back in Cape Town six months ago, I was so delighted to see him. I got to know him last year when he was learning English at EC Cape Town. He can be described as an all-rounder – friendly, hard-working, sincere and dedicated. This is his last week studying with us and he shared a piece with me which he wrote recently. Of course, I can’t keep it to myself…so here it is! True Love by Abdurrahim “Abo” Korkmaz Surfing is everything for me. You don’t need anything. Without words, without language. Straight into your heart. You do not have to think. You just feel colour. Emotion. This is friendship with wind, waves, sail and a board. This is true love…life. Life is windsurfing for me. Wind gives me life.
