5 Ways to Stay Motivated when you’re Learning English

Sharing is caring!

Whether you’re learning English abroad or just want to get serious about independent study, it can be difficult to stay motivated over an extended period of time. As the saying goes: ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day!’ Learning a brand-new language takes time and a lot of hard work and dedication, but as any one of our awesome EC teachers will tell you, a little motivation goes a very long way. Feeling a bit uninspired lately? Don’t worry – today, we’re taking a look at 5 ways to stay motivated when you’re learning English!

1| Set mini-goals

Turn the ‘big’ task of learning a language into a series of smaller goals! You get to tailor those mini-goals to suit you, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Learn and use at least one new word a day
  • Watch a short video (in English) with no subtitles – how much did you understand?
  • Go out an speak to at least one person in English, even if you’re just asking them what time it is
  • Read for 15 minutes each day and add new vocabulary to your notebook
  • Learn the words to one of your favourite songs in English
  • Write in a journal every day
  • Try two new Learn English lessons every week

One step at a time – you’ll get there before you know it.

2| Spend less time online

Facebook, Instagram, cute cat videos – the internet is home to a wealth of resources, but it can also become a big time-waster that’ll leave you feeling lazy and unmotivated. If you struggle with self-control, try downloading a Chrome add on like StayFocused to limit the time you spend on certain websites. Focus. You can do this!

3| Get some air

Taking regular breaks is as important to the learning process as studying and frequent practice. When you need a little break, why not go relax with a cup of tea or head outside for a walk to clear your head? Other activities that are great for helping you unwind are yoga, jogging, swimming, drawing, or catching up with your friends over something delicious to eat. It’s all up to you!

4| Check your progress

If you’re learning English with EC in one of our beautiful destinations, you’ll have access to EC Online. EC Online is an amazing online tool that allows you to access loads of resources, track your progress, and test your abilities. But if you don’t have access to this specific tool, it’s alright! We’ve got lots of free English lessons  and resources  available to you right now, so there’s no reason to wait!

5| Treat yourself

When you work hard, remember to reward yourself! Whether it’s ordering a huge hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows, spending a few hours playing your favourite video game, or heading out to watch a film with friends – it’s important to be kind to yourself and recognise your efforts.
