St. Patrick's Day: The History and Upcoming Events

Sharing is caring!

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th each year and was originally intended to honour the patron saint of Ireland, however it has become a popular, green-themed holiday around the world. In Ireland, locals and visitors alike dress in emerald green and let themselves be captivated by music, costumes, and beautiful parades!

Who was Saint Patrick?

Originally from Britain, it was at the age of 16 that Patrick’s life changed: he was kidnapped and made a slave by Irish pirates for 6 long years. While in captivity he learned more about Christianity and eventually converted himself. He eventually escaped and returned to Britain where he continued to study about Christianity.

Later he chose to return to Ireland to bring Christianity to the Irish who, at that time, were for the majority pagans and druids. He began to preach in the small islands near the Emerald Isle and eventually brought Christianity to the whole of Ireland through baptism, electing priests and guiding women to the monastic life, converting the sons of kings and helping in the creation of more than 300 churches.
