Background information:
I am originally from Port Elizabeth and moved to Cape Town about 7 years ago! I have been a teacher at EC Cape Town for the past 5 years and in that time participated in many initiatives, including the new Fusion online platform! ? EC Cape Town has allowed me to grow, develop my methodology and overall experience in this industry. In the process I have made many friends and seen my students flourish in ways I could never imagine.
Years spent teaching: Over 15 years
What made you decide to become a teacher?
I always wanted to make an impact and leave a mark; teaching has allowed me to do this. It has not always been easy, but my students’ feedback when they leave and the continuing contact reminds me that this is exactly where I need to be at this point.
What’s the thing you love most about teaching English at EC?
Firstly, my colleagues; I can always count on their support and ask for assistance, even when they are busy ?. Together we create the ‘vibe’ that is so essential at EC Cape Town. Secondly, my students as they give me the energy to continue and be a better teacher. It is not difficult to give your best when you are surrounded by dedication and motivation. And even if that is not always there, my challenging students have become some of my best friends! Finally, this organisation has given me the chance to learn, develop and become part of a global group of people who are so talented that they make you want to be better.
What makes teaching at EC so special?
The amount of opportunities to develop. You cannot remain stagnant at EC, there is always another innovation that challenges you to get involved. ? I love challenges and I love being part of something new!
What’s one thing you’ve learned from a student that really stands out?
Not every student is the same, but every committed student is worth going that extra mile!
What is your favourite story about a student/teaching?
I had a student who could not understand why he was not improving. He bought an extra grammar book and did every exercise ahead of the class (so he could be prepared). But he had made no real connection with any of the other students and spent his time alone with his books. He wanted to improve his speaking and listening but was going about it the wrong way. I took the books away and explained that listening and speaking required being interested in the other person/people. I suggested he leave his books (and home) for a while, make friends and use his current English, even if just at the supermarket with other students or staff at EC Cape Town. He took the advice and started his day speaking to Kaashiefa at reception and going out with his classmates. The change started happening and when he left he explained that previously he had to use a translator for meetings. When he left, he felt he no longer needed one…. and today he still doesn’t. ?
