Design Museum‏ and more!

Sharing is caring!

Our trip last Friday 11th March was based around a visit to the Design Museum but we managed to pack in a lot of other enjoyable activities as well.

After meeting at the School we walked through Covent Garden and down to the Thames to catch the river boat from the Embankment Pier. Its a particularly interesting journey taking in the sites along the North and South banks of the Thames and the cameras were out to capture some of the landmarks. The boat stopped by the Tower of London where we walked along the riverside and looked at the massive walls of the castle from the outside. We then went across Tower Bridge (lots more photos) and down into the lanes by the old wharves where the buildings now house smart restaurants, expensive flats and creative businesses.

The Design Museum is one of the world’s leading museums and is devoted to contemporary design in every form. From furniture to graphics and from architecture to industrial design. It was great to look around and then we discovered the shop which provided as big an attraction as the museum itself! There were some great items to look at and a number were bought by our group as a memento of our visit.

We were still feeling full of energy so we decided to walk back along the Thames path and went past Tower Bridge again, City Hall and then spent some time looking at HMS Belfast. This massive ship dates back to the 2nd World War and was one of the most powerful large light cruisers ever built. A very impressive sight.

We then walked on to London Bridge to have a quick look at Borough Market, taking in a walk past the replica of the Golden Hinde and the magnificent Southwark Cathedral. A packed itinerary. Refreshments gave us a chance to refuel ourselves over a lively chat and we were then ready to head back in good spirits to start the weekend.
