Celebrating Christmas in England

It is December and that can only mean one thing. Christmas! Do you celebrate Christmas in your country? I you do, how do you celebrate? Celebrations in your country are undoubtedly as unique and special as our traditions here in England! So, what do we do here to enjoy this special time of year? The Tree No Christmas is complete without a tree in your living room, be it a real fir tree or an artificial tree. These days, more people are buying artificial trees with snow, fir cones and red berries on the branches. Some people love big tall trees that touch the ceiling while other people look for small trees in pots that can be put in the garden after Christmas to continue growing ready for next December. People spend time decorating their tree with twinkling fairy lights and lovely round baubles in rich beautiful colours such as red, gold and silver. After the tree is finished, families put their gifts to each other underneath it wrapped in beautiful coloured paper. With the introduction of artificial trees many families now decorate their homes at the very beginning of December. If you walk around the streets of England, you will see many beautifully decorated houses both inside and out! Christmas Eve – the 24th December In England, Christmas Eve is a day full of excitement and anticipation but unlike Europe, we don’t usually spend this day with family, eat traditional food or open gifts in the evening. Instead, we may go to work during the day and in the evening celebrate with friends in a restaurant or pub. Excitement is in the air and everyone is in a fantastic mood ready for the next day. Some people use this day to do some last-minute Christmas shopping! Some families go … Read more

Online English Virtual Quiz

With Covid restrictions in place, organising online English virtual social activities for students has been more challenging than in previous times. However, with the enthusiasm of our wonderful and energetic students at EC London, we have been able to host a successful regular activity in the form of a English virtual quiz. These quizzes have taken place on our EC Virtual platform, Microsoft Teams. This has enabled us to keep students in their bubbles for a successful and socially distanced social programme. Quizzes so far So far, at EC London we have hosted two quizzes. One quiz was about music and the winners of this quiz were able to choose the topic of the following week’s quiz. The topic they chose was movies. Here’s what was included in each one… Music quiz Our music quiz, created by our assistant director of studies, Daniel, consisted of 6 rounds. These ranged from a dancing round to a Tik Tok round. The winners were Melissa’s Army with our students, Mark, Erwan, Linus and Yujin. They then decided to Film quiz Our film quiz, created by our assistant director of studies, Andy, consisted also of 6 rounds, ranging from a picture round to foreign translation round. The big moment in this quiz, though, came in the bonus round where students had to recreate a famous film scene, taken from Lord of the Rings. Take a look at the picture below and decide for yourself who you think recreated the original scene best: Our winner on the day was Jeongwoon (picture number 2), but the others also submitted fantastic pictures that may have easily won on another day. Future social activities This week, we are planning to watch an episode from a British TV show. All students will be able to join online and talk … Read more

English Courses with New Friends in London

My Name is Andy and I have been teaching English courses at EC London for 8 years. I have seen, now more than ever, students learning English by making new friends and speaking together outside of the classroom and I want to share what I have seen with you. New Friends With the current global situation, I have found that the students who are studying at the EC London school right now are looking for any opportunity to maximise human connections. Before class, during breaks and after class, it is wonderful to see learners planning their afternoons, evening and weekends together, trying to make the most of their EC and London experience even more fruitful and memorable. The one thing that is really touching is how established students welcome new students with open arms and are keen to involve them in their social experiences outside of class time. Social Life From speaking to students, it is wonderful to hear what they have been doing with their free time when not in class. They have been going out on walks, going to pubs, going to restaurants, visiting museums, relaxing in parks, sightseeing and even more I’m sure. For some of these students, they are embarking on a new chapter in their lives. For others, they are learning English to study at university. Some are learning English out of interest or out of a desire to travel or for their work. One thing that all of these students have in common, though, is a desire to be social in an environment where they are able to enrich not only their EC or London experience, but their life experience as a whole. Speaking English While students speak a lot of English in class, it is important that they continue this outside of the … Read more

Places in London

Hello! It is Dorian again! I’m the new intern at the EC Euston reception in EC London? Today I’m going to talk to you about the different places where I have been in London since I arrived. The place which impressed me the most is sky garden, it’s a garden with a pub on the top of a big building. From this place you can look at all London. It’s just amazing because you are at the fiftieth floor of a building in a very beautiful green garden watching at the beautiful city of London all around you. Obviously, it’s much better when it’s about 9pm because you can see the sunset. More importantly, it’s free! Another place which marked me a lot was Camden Town. It’s a market street where you can buy various interesting things. That’s a good place to buy for example covers for your phone, British souvenirs and clothes. The street is very beautiful because many shops have their own special design. Words cannot express how stunning they are, you need to go to see by your eyes! The funniest part for me is that I can negotiate prices with all the sellers. In the most cases they will tell you that a keyring costs 10 pounds but you can tell them “ok its too much I will take it for 4 pounds” and eventually you will buy it with 6 pounds (it’s just an example). Personally, I enjoy the process of bargain so much! Additionally, it’s the punk rock neighborhood of London where you can find the true punk English people who are interested in tattoos and piercings and so on.   For me these two places are crazy and are absolutely “a must to do” in London. Dorian.

Hello, I’m the new intern !

Hello, My Name is Dorian, I am the new Student Services intern of EC London. I’m 20 years old and I’m French ?. I was born in the real countryside of France in the south west. During my childhood, as every boy I loved playing video games and watching dragon ball (and I still love it ahahaha) I got a scientific secondary school diploma and then I entered in a business school in Bordeaux (famous French city for the wine in the south west). I am currently studying international business. I would like to get an MBA to become an export manager or another job related with international business in order to not live in France. I am interning in EC school because I want to improve my level of English., I’m also meeting a lot of people from all around the world (Chinese, Brazilian, Saudi Arabian, Russian etc…) which is very important for me to know the different mindsets of people to work abroad. I have been learning English since I’m 12 years old, and last year I got 6.5 at the International English testing system (IELTS) which has allowed me to continue my studies abroad. Next September I’m going to study in the international business school of Dublin and I will continue my life in Dublin instead of France. I am very excited about it especially that my life will be completely in English. I love travelling to discover something different, I especially love countries from the east of Europe (Scandinavian and Slavic countries), for example I have been in Norway… I’m also currently learning Russian for one year. Indeed, my business school is asking us to learn two languages in addition to French and as I mentioned before I like Slavic cultures that’s why I chose Russian. … Read more

My first experience in London

Hello, my name is Alice, I am 22 years old. I am studying my fourth year at the Burgundy School of Business in Dijon, a small town in France. My main fields are Management, Finance and Marketing. Currently in a gap year, I have been in London for two months. At the beginning I worked in a charity shop to improve my English and to have a new professional experience. Then I started an internship at EC English School London and I am here until the end of August. I am assisting the accommodation coordinator. Indeed, students can take their accommodation with EC London, we have many residences and house families to propose you. I have got the great opportunity to do my internship in this company because I think it’s the best place to work and to study. All the people are very welcoming. In addition, I can say that it is a wonderful experience to work with people that come from all around the world. In London, I share a flat with other people near Canary Wharf. There are many beautiful places to see in London. If you want to keep in the loop, don’t forget to watch every week the articles that we write on this blog !

London : World’s Best Destination

Dubai, Marrakech, Tokyo, Paris, Bali, Phuket, Barcelona, Istanbul… On a list of the 25 best-rated destinations in the world, London now holds the first place ! The Capital of the United Kingdom is now named as ‘world’s best destination for 2019’ in TripAdvisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice awards. Apart from the fact that this city is just amazing, how can we explain this position? There are several reasons explaining that top place. One of them is that London is full of activities. Indeed, you can find beautiful parks, museums (free for some of them). In London you can also find some of the best restaurants and an amazing nightlife for young and old people. As you can see, everybody can be quickly addicted to that London life! Moreover, during the past 12 months a lot of exceptional events happened in London, such as the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Football World Cup, which attracted lots of visitors, creating a buzzing atmosphere in the capital. It has been 2 months since I started my London life and I just can’t get enough of every place that I am discovering each day when I leave EC School, and even more on weekends. What I really like here in London is the number of activities but also, ( and especially) the diversity of restaurants, because food is my number one passion. Here are some pictures of London that I have taken since my arrival. Enjoy!                                                            If you would like to take part of ‘the London life experience’ and Learn English Abroad , then join us at EC School London and discover … Read more

World Book Day 2019

On Thursday 7th March 2019, we celebrated the World Book Day at EC London ! That day is also known as ‘World Book and Copyright Day’, or ‘International Day of the Book’. It is an annual event organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in order to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. It was a way to ask yourself how reading can improve your English learning process! I can speak about my own way of english learning and especially my love for that language, which started when I was thirteen or fourteen years old, through the poems that I was reading in books, and that I still read on social medias, at twenty-two years old. We invited all the student to come at the main reception to share with us their favorite quotes from books they read. Here are some of the quotes that the students wrote:   ‘And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it’ – The Alchemist   ‘ It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.’ – The Little Prince        If you would like to take part of similar events and activities, then you should come and join us at EC English School London  🙂 Cheers, Maryam

Feedback from a Russian student!

Hi, My name is Grigoriy, I’m a previous student at EC London from Russia. I chose to attend to EC because they offer the opportunity to study in cities and countries all around the world. I got two birds in one stone, travelling and studying, which I found really convenient! Another reason why I picked EC is because of the really good prices they offer. It is not too expensive! I would describe EC London as perfect and fantastic! Everything was good. The most unforgettable memories of EC are the positive relationships between each other and the great atmosphere! My favourite places to hang out in the evenings are different ones, but in Sunday afternoon I prefer Leicter Square. I would definitely recommend this english language school London to a friend, actually I would recommend EC to all of my friends. Best Wishes, Grigoriy
