Online English Virtual Quiz

With Covid restrictions in place, organising online English virtual social activities for students has been more challenging than in previous times. However, with the enthusiasm of our wonderful and energetic students at EC London, we have been able to host a successful regular activity in the form of a English virtual quiz. These quizzes have taken place on our EC Virtual platform, Microsoft Teams. This has enabled us to keep students in their bubbles for a successful and socially distanced social programme. Quizzes so far So far, at EC London we have hosted two quizzes. One quiz was about music and the winners of this quiz were able to choose the topic of the following week’s quiz. The topic they chose was movies. Here’s what was included in each one… Music quiz Our music quiz, created by our assistant director of studies, Daniel, consisted of 6 rounds. These ranged from a dancing round to a Tik Tok round. The winners were Melissa’s Army with our students, Mark, Erwan, Linus and Yujin. They then decided to Film quiz Our film quiz, created by our assistant director of studies, Andy, consisted also of 6 rounds, ranging from a picture round to foreign translation round. The big moment in this quiz, though, came in the bonus round where students had to recreate a famous film scene, taken from Lord of the Rings. Take a look at the picture below and decide for yourself who you think recreated the original scene best: Our winner on the day was Jeongwoon (picture number 2), but the others also submitted fantastic pictures that may have easily won on another day. Future social activities This week, we are planning to watch an episode from a British TV show. All students will be able to join online and talk … Read more

What’s it like going to an English school in London during Covid? Chien gives a brief summary of his experience. I am studying at EC London this year for the General English course. I really like being here because the school has such a diverse culture – just like the city of London. The transport is convenient as it brings me directly to the school. English Courses with New Friends in London

My Name is Andy and I have been teaching English courses at EC London for 8 years. I have seen, now more than ever, students learning English by making new friends and speaking together outside of the classroom and I want to share what I have seen with you. New Friends With the current global situation, I have found that the students who are studying at the EC London school right now are looking for any opportunity to maximise human connections. Before class, during breaks and after class, it is wonderful to see learners planning their afternoons, evening and weekends together, trying to make the most of their EC and London experience even more fruitful and memorable. The one thing that is really touching is how established students welcome new students with open arms and are keen to involve them in their social experiences outside of class time. Social Life From speaking to students, it is wonderful to hear what they have been doing with their free time when not in class. They have been going out on walks, going to pubs, going to restaurants, visiting museums, relaxing in parks, sightseeing and even more I’m sure. For some of these students, they are embarking on a new chapter in their lives. For others, they are learning English to study at university. Some are learning English out of interest or out of a desire to travel or for their work. One thing that all of these students have in common, though, is a desire to be social in an environment where they are able to enrich not only their EC or London experience, but their life experience as a whole. Speaking English While students speak a lot of English in class, it is important that they continue this outside of the … Read more

Hi, I’m the new student services intern!

Hi everyone! My name Is Louise Lamarre, born and raised in Sweden Gothenburg. I’m 19 years old and I got the amazing opportunity to do an internship here at EC London. Gothenburg, where I have been living my whole life, is the perfect city to study at Uni since we have such a big amount of different universities. It’s also a lovely place during the summer, close to the sea, loads of cozy coffee shops and it’s a nice city for students in general. I study economics/business in Gothenburg’s biggest school, where I got the opportunity to take the internship abroad. My hope and goal was coming to EC London, luckily I got the spot and now I’m working in the main reception with student services for two months, which I’m very grateful for. On my spare time I like to spend time with friends and travel with them. I also enjoy playing sports like tennis and sailing, which I’ve been doing for almost 10 years now. I’m a very curious person, maybe a bit too curious, so I really like discovering new things about different places, people, history, art, etc. I would say that London is the perfect place, it’s such a big city with a lot of possibilities and different people. When I’ve finished my studies, I’d like to study and work abroad since I love learning new things about different countries such as language and culture. That’s also one of the biggest reasons I wanted to come to London and work at EC, to improve my English. So far I’m loving both London and EC. Everyone is super caring and just nice people in general. I work with an awesome team and I couldn’t enjoy my stay more. If you would like to join me to learn … Read more

Speaking of Munich, Winter Wonderland offers you even more insight into Bavarian culture. The so-called Bavarian Village presents you with an Oktoberfest experience right in the middle of London. Traditional German foods like Bratwurst and Bretzel will come your way. The festive atmosphere gets even better as there is live music and DJs. Apart from the fun fair and the Bavarian Village, you can stroll around traditional Christmas Markets. Plenty of wooden chalets will inspire you. Christmassy

Christmas is coming!

Christmas is coming soon, so prepare yourself for a Christmassy-looking EC London. But before our school’s Christmas decoration pops up, you can enjoy yourself by walking around in London’s city centre. The Christmas lights have been on since last week and make London look even prettier than usual. Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus All over Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus you will find London’s classic Christmas lights. Huge golden angels are hanging above the street and are brightening your Christmas mood. This is the place to go if you’re looking for some traditional Christmas decoration.   Carnaby Street If you are looking out for some more colourful and diverse Christmas lights, head over to Carnaby Street. Known for its fashionable vibe, Carnaby’s Christmas lights are representing all that is cool. This year’s lights are ocean-themed. They have been designed in collaboration with an ocean conservation charity. The display was created out of 1.500 recycled bottles and repurposed fishing nets. Therefore, Carnaby’s Christmas lights are not only nice to look at, but, at the same time, have a special meaning behind them. Covent Garden Covent Garden also has his own Christmas decoration. These lights are mostly star-themed and make the area look even more beautiful than usual. This year’s Christmas Lights are as stunning as usual. No matter if by day or night, you will be amazed at how breathtaking they are.

Hidden Places in London-Kingly Court

Being a student at EC London gives you the chance to discover many interesting places. As I have already mentioned Neal’s Yard in a previous post, I would like to come up with another hidden place in London. Kingly Court is located in Soho, one of London’s most fashionable areas. You can find it right behind Liberty in Carnaby Street. Carnaby Street is famous for its fashion boutiques, its diversity and its restaurants. In Kingly Court you can truly feel all of this. The hidden courtyard is picturesque. Apart from colourful little houses, plants and lights, you can find many different kinds of restaurants. There are 21 of international concept restaurants, bars and cafes. If you love pizza, there is Pizza Pilgrims. If you fancy Indian food, go to Darjeeling express. You can even try Peruanian food at a restaurant called Senor Ceviche. Kingly Court also offers loads of healthy food options. The Detox Kitchen sells all healthy food free from wheat, dairy and refined sugars. At Acai Berry you can try fruity acai bowls and smoothies. So no matter if you are craving burgers, ramen or kebab, you can find anything here. Apart from all the amazing restaurants, Kingly Court’s architecture gives a really nice vibe. There is a colourful railing all around the courtyard, paired with little plants and lights around it. In the summer, it’s open air, so you can sit outside and enjoy with your friends. In the winter, it’s covered so you can still sit outside and be thrilled by the beautiful lights.   Kingly Court is definitely worth a visit. Even if you just want to walk around or try some of the amazing restaurants, you won’t regret going there.

Nice Japanese Places to visit in London!

Are you a Japanese student at EC London who feels nostalgic of his home country? Or are you just a Japanese culture addicted person? You’re reading a post that might interest you! As i said previously, I love asian culture so much. I’ve been living here for almost three months and I often go in some Asian places that you might like. Here you can find a list of some of my favourite. Japan Centre Japan Centre is the best place to get…everything! I love it because it’s the only one place where I can get pieces of sashimi to make sushi at home. Since I love cooking japanese food, I’ve been there for the first time because I was looking for ingredients to make takoyaki (octopus balls), and I found everything there! I was so happy! Moreover you can buy also items such as anime and manga magazines, JLPT books, calligraphy stationary and so on.     Necco Japanese Bar Located in Exmouth Market (Angel), it is a place that all the Japanese people might call kawaii (cute). The walls are pink, the waiters are very nice and friendly. Even the toilet is kawaii, with flowers everywhere. You can also buy items there and the price is medium high. I used to go there many times before moving in Archway because that was the only one place where i could eat takoyaki. Taiyakiya In the middle of Chinatown there are many touristic places where you can buy cheap Asian food but no one sells good Japanese taiyaki like this one. The place is very small but once you come inside you feel like being in Japan. You can listen anime soundtrack while you are waiting for your taiyaki. But what is it? When you watch Japanese anime, you always … Read more
