Farewell Senorita Woo!

Today we said farewell to our lovely student counsellor, Esther Woo.  She has been working at EC Montreal for the past 2 years and is now returning to Korea.  I can truly say our Operations team will not be the same without her. We had a farewell lunch party to celebrate her time with us! We wish her all the luck and happiness she deserves. Adios Senorita Woo!

apple picking around Montreal

Apple picking season, a popular fall activity in Montreal, lasts from mid-August to late October in Quebec. There are so many orchard  ( or”vergers” in French) within an hour’s driving distance from Montreal, that apple picking is really an activity accessible to everyone. Actually you don’t even need a car anymore to get to an orchard. For a fixed price, the Agence Métropolitaine de Transport offers an “apple orchard tour” with train fare and the cost of a ten-pound bag of apples for each apple picker age 13 and over included in the price (apple pickers ages 12 and under are allocated a 5-pound bag of apples). Just remember to pack a lunch to go as this particular Montreal train Escapade does not include meals. The train departs at the Gare Centrale  at 895 de la Gauchetière West, between Mansfield and University( Bonaventure Metro) with the following schedule: Every Saturday from September 8 to October 13, 2012 Saturday train departures at 12 p.m.  Saturday return trips arrive back in downtown Montreal at 5 p.m So, pull out your tasty apple based tarts and pies and start baking a yummy desert as soon get back from you apple picking experience!

Sinful September

The theme for September at EC Montreal  is apples and wine.  Planning the free monthly activities is a lot of work but something the operations team greatly enjoys.  On the menu;  apple martinis, all types of foods made from our wonderful Quebec apples; apple pancakes and apple pies to name a few and wine tasting!! Our homestay Louise was kind to send us her recipe for apple & blackberry crumble.  Looks delicious!!!  And remember, everyone is welcomed to participate in all the fun at EC Montreal. Ingredients For the filling 900g/2lb apples 350-400g/12oz-1lb blackberries 175 g/6 oz sugar 2 lemons For the topping 225g/8oz flour 175g/6oz butter 55g/2oz sugar 125g/4oz muesli or a mixture of oats, seeds and chopped nuts Preparation method Preheat the oven to 200C/400F Peel, core and chop the apples into small chunks. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice over the apple and mix well. This not only adds flavour but prevents the freshly peeled apples from discolouring. Layer the apples, blackberries, and sugar in a large pie dish (a lasagne dish is ideal). Place the flour in a large bowl and then rub in the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs – leave a few lumps of butter so that the topping is not too fine. Add the muesli or oat/seed/nut mixture and the sugar and mix through. Use a spoon to sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit. Bake for 45 minutes or until the fruit is cooked and bubbling juices seep through the topping. Cool for a few minutes and then serve with custard or fresh cream.

September Theme is on Display!

Our Operations team had an amazing time last night decorating the student lounge and updating our student board with our September theme.  You may remember from our previous blogs that the theme in September is “Sinful September – month of forbidden fruits and guilty pleasures”.  We will be celebrating apple and wine season in Quebec.  We will be giving students a taste of Montrea with an appletini lounge on September 6 and Apple Festival, where we will be serving apple pancakes, apple pie, apple & cinnamon tea and fresh apples!  At the end of the month we will have a wine and cider tasting activity.     Throughout the month of September, we will be hiding an apple around the school.  The apple will contain a skill testing question – “apple related”.  The student who finds the apple should return it to the office to claim their prize.  We have 19 prizes waiting to be claimed!!We look forward to this delicious month – punn intended!
