Today, EC Montreal’s Upper Intermediate class held a wonderful TED-talk event!  Seven students led by teachers Souha and Valerie, presented a topic that interests them or that they are passionate about. The students did a stellar job in presenting!

Arturo presented on the benefits of being in your fifties.  He began with a joke stating that the best part of being in your fifties is that your friends will keep your secrets because they don’t remember them!  He spoke about one of his great inspirations an artist who later took on roles in politics and law.  This inspired him to go back to his studies while working a full time job with a wife and children.  His presentation was very touching.

Taekyoung was up next and her presentation was about blood types and how one’s type determines their personality, character traits and even their profession!  She explained that the Korean and Japanese cultures place a lot of importance on blood type so much so that it is one of the first questions you ask when meeting someone new.

Luis presented next on fears – how we all have fears and we need to learn to conquer our fears so we don’t miss out on life and have regrets.  He told a story about how when he was younger he went on a school trip and the students were given two options; horseback riding or extreme sports.  He chose the safer option of riding because he had done this before.  He later regretted it because he saw all his friends having such a good time taking risks.

Gabriel presented on Disney Magic and how we should watch their animations with great caution as they send the wrong messages to those more impressionable.  For example; with Snow White and the seven dwarfs.  The dwarfs go off to work while the woman stays home and cleans.  This is sexist.

Leonora was last to present.  Her presentation was on memory.  She talked about sensory, short-term and long-term memory and the differences between the different types.  She went on to explain how images and sometimes certain smells can trigger a memory.

We were so impressed by all the presenters and learned so much from them today.  A world of thanks go to Souha and Valerie, the Upper-Intermediate teachers who worked so hard with the group of students and helped them gain the confidence needed to present to the school.
