Jeongmin Kim Presents: Oligopoly in the Music Business

Sharing is caring!

Yesterday, Jeongmin Kim presented to the school as part of EC Montreal’s Student Academic Lecture Series.  He chose to talk about the music industry.  Jeongmin explained that he is studying music at the university and this is his passion.  He is a music composer.

Jeongmin started his presentation by explaining what an oligopoly was and gave examples of other industries. The examples he gave here the construction industry in Montreal and the school uniform business in Korea.  He then began to talk about the music business and gave the top 3 names; Universal, Sony and Warner.  They represent over 90% of the market share.

Jeongmin explained that this is a problem because it does not give independent labels a chance and artists usually “sell out” and change their appearance or music genre to appease the big record labels.

Jeongmin gave a stellar presentation and answered questions from the audience beautifully.  He was asked to share some of his own music and he gave us all a sample.  He is very talented!

Jeongmin has been participating in EC Montreal’s Academic Year Bilingual programme since April 24.  He is currently taking French core lessons and English electives.  He is a very popular student and attracted quite the crowd at yesterday’s presentation.  He was a little nervous but he did an amazing job!

We are so proud of his achievements and for sharing his passion with EC Montreal!
