EC Montreal’s March Teachers of the Month!

Every month, EC Montreal students have a chance to vote for their favorite teacher of the month.  We look forward to this every month, especially to reading all the wonderful comments our students make about their teachers. This month our students voted for Olga as the English teacher of the month and Yasser for French.  This isn’t Yasser’s first win.  He has won several times before and he is always so very excited.  We surprised him in class with a certificate and small gift.  His students cheered with great enthusiasm and posed proudly with the winning teacher. This was, however, Olga’s first win.  Although she gets many votes every month, this was her first time winning!  We are so very happy for her.  We surprised her and all her students applauded and were overjoyed with the news.  They too posed very proudly with their teacher and helped her to celebrate this wonderful achievement. We want to thank all our students who took the time to vote and for all your wonderful comments about our teachers.  We are very proud to share all the comments with you below: I like her activities in class. A Spot of Maple Tea and Conversation at EC Montreal!

The maple themed activities continued this week at EC Montreal.  We held a tea and conversation activity for our students.  We had delicious maple tea brewing and maple cookies.  Although last week was the first day of spring, it has been unseasonably cold in Montreal.  The cup of warm tea was just what our students needed before heading outside to the -10 degree temperature outside. The students lounged around with their friends sipping tea and chatting up a storm! At EC Montreal we like to create these opportunities for students to interact with one another and to make new friends.  These opportunities are especially important for new students or those students who are shy and have difficulty socializing. Creating a sense of an EC community at the school is also our goal through these weekly complimentary activities.  We want the students to stay at the school as much as possible bonding with their fellow school mates. We look forward to our first April complimentary activity next week!  A delicious sushi making workshop!

EC Montreal Student Focus Group Feedback!

Every week, EC Montreal meets with its departing students to get feedback on their EC experience.  This information is essential for us to improve our services and to address common student concerns.  This week we met with students from Mexico, Germany, Japan, England and Switzerland.  Here is what they had to say about their EC experience: Theodore from England I chose EC Montreal as I wanted to study French but outside of France.  I studied at the school for a month.  My French did improve in terms of vocabulary.  In terms of grammar, I learned nothing new.  I thought my teachers were good.  They were clearly passionate and enjoyed their jobs.  They were always very approachable and kind.  My accommodation was excellent and so were my host parents, Marc and Chantal.  I felt very at home and was well-fed.  I would recommend EC to a friend.  There is too much English in the school so my experience was not entirely immersive.  I made friends from mainly South America and Japan.  Being the sole representative of my nationality at EC wasn’t too bad. Valentine from Switzerland I really like EC and I am a bit sad to leave because it is really helpful!  The only thing that I would say is that it is expensive but I know it is a private school so if has to be expensive.  I really appreciated the method of teaching like the group exercises and the written assignments that are more personal at the school like for example talking about different countries, cultures or things that we appreciate.  It is also interesting to speak with other students who are learning here about other cultures. Julian from Germany In general, I really enjoyed my time at EC.  I chose Montreal because my French wasn’t the best … Read more

Please note that this testimonial has been translated from Portuguese. I chose EC Montreal because I have friends who live in Montreal and they invited me to stay at their house.  I find Montreal to be a very interesting and beautiful city.  I have been studying English and learning about another culture.  I have improved a lot!   The extra activities in the English in the City class was my favorite, especially the shopping in the mall with our teacher Lori.  We had a lot of opportunities to practice our conversation skills with the other students.  I really like the dynamic way of teaching at EC.  It is very good.  I really enjoying staying at my friends’ house in Montreal. I would recommend EC with certainty.  I made a lot of friends from Colombia, Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, France and Turkey.  I really appreciated the attention received by the school staff who are friendly and proactive.  Montreal in general is a great city.  The public transportation, ease of outings, the people are respectful, there are many cultural and historic sites to visit.

EC Montreal’s Sugar Shack Team-Building Event!

Last Friday, EC Montreal staff and teachers went to a local Sugar Shack for our annual team-building activity! As it is maple season in the province of Quebec, we thought it would be a wonderful idea to share the “Cabane à Sucre” experience with the team! It is important for our team to be given opportunities to spend time together outside the school and the stress of work, to learn about each other and to have bonding experiences. We spend so much of our time at work and we know from experience that a united team is a more productive and motivated team! We went to a nearby maple farm and had a traditional sugar shack meal that was served family-style! The meal consisted of local flavors including ham, baked beans, omelet, sausage, meat pies, meatballs, pickled vegetables and pea soup. Of course, the most anticipated part of the meal was dessert! All maple flavored and delicious! We had a taste of pancakes, sugar pie and doughnuts! They served us Quebec beer and a shot of a liquor called Caribou, that is intended to keep you warm as you venture the cold outdoors! After our tasty lunch, we went on a tractor ride of the maple farm and ended with a taffy maple treat before boarding the bus back home! We enjoyed our time together and feel energized to serve our EC Montreal students!

EC Montreal’s April Calendar of Events!

Spring is right around the corner and EC Montreal is so excited to present its April calendar of events! Every April, EC Montreal’s theme is gastronomy! When EC Montreal created its English and French plus programme, the obvious choice was gastronomy because the city of Montreal is known for its fabulous restaurants, culinary schools and food markets. Throughout the month of April, we will be introducing our students to local foods and flavors as well as leading culinary workshops such as sushi making and cupcake decorating. The first week, we will lead a sushi making workshop. We will show our students how they can roll their very own sushi with their favorite ingredients! The following week we will give our students a taste of our local food; poutine! Poutine is the ultimate comfort food made from fries, gravy and cheese curds. It is sinfully delicious! It was invented in the province of Quebec and is now known world-wide! Even the fanciest of restaurants offer a type of poutine on their menus. Garde Manger, in Old Montreal, for example, serves a lobster poutine! We will be hosting very special EC employees this week and cannot wait to introduce them to EC Montreal’s complimentary activities! On April 17, we will lead a cupcake decorating activity. Each table in the student lounge will offer a selection of naked cupcakes and different toppings so students can be creative and produce their very own cupcakes! On April 24, EC Montreal will host a tea and conversation activity where we will enjoy a selection of teas while we get to know one another. In addition to our weekly complimentary activities, EC will organize an outing to Fairmount Bagel in the Plateau Mont-Royal, a tour of the Jean-Talon market in Little Italy, a Smoked meat group dinner, … Read more

EC Montreal Students Devour Montreal!

Throughout their stay, EC Montreal students have many opportunities to enjoy a Taste of Montreal.  Every month, EC Montreal offers a free activities programme at the school.  We offer a variety of activities that include fitness, teambuilding activities, music, dance and what we call “A taste of Montreal”.  We share our local foods and specialties to our students depending on the time of year and what our monthly theme is. Our students will have a lot to look forward to all year long in terms of getting a taste of Montreal.  In February, to celebrate the month of love and indulgence, EC Montreal hosts its annual chocolate festival.  We serve our students a variety of local chocolates; including a chocolate fountain!! In March, we look forward to our Sugar Shack festivities.  Sugar Shacks are located on maple farms where maple sap is extracted from the trees and turned into the most delicious maple syrup.  We will celebrate this sweet tradition with our students with a month-long activity list that will include pancake day and a visit to a traditional Sugar Shack – known as La Cabane à Sucre for us Quebecers!  In addition, we celebrate Brazilian carnival with lots of tropical fruits and Brazilian treats! April is dedicated to Gastronomy at EC Montreal.  Every week, students are introduced to a local flavor or are given a culinary class such as sushi making lessons or cupcake decorating.  In addition, we will have a taste of poutine activity and a tea and conversation event. The month of May as in January, we talk to our students about health and fitness.  We will have a healthy lunch day as well as a taste of local Quebec beers.
