Le Diner des Cons – A Day at the Movies with EC Montreal!

On Tuesday July 23, watching the movie “Le diner des cons” was scheduled on EC Montreal’s activity calendar. Each month EC Montreal students enjoy the possibility of participating in a huge variety of different free activities in the afternoon. Besides watching French and English movies, students will also have the chance to gain special skills for work in our English/French for work clinics or practice their conversation skills during various lectures. The best thing is that all these activities are free for our students! If you think about studying English or French abroad, EC Montreal is the right place to do so because we can assure you that you will receive even more services than what you paid for! “Le Diner des cons” – translated “Dinner with fools”- is a French comedy that was released in 1998 and directed by Francis Veber. Pierre Brochant, a Parisian publisher, attends a weekly “idiots’ dinner”, where guests, who are modish, prominent Parisian businessmen, must bring along an “idiot” who the other guests can ridicule. At the end of the dinner, the evening’s “champion idiot” is selected. Our students enjoyed this comedy and were able to improve their speaking & listening skills during the group discussion afterwards! They are looking forward to  the next movie soon!

The Smurfs 2 Being Filmed in Montreal

Sony Pictures is currently shooting The Smurfs 2 in Montreal.  Sony opened their production office in Montreal in January and have started shooting this past Friday, May 11.  The Smurfs sequel is to hit theatres in 2013. We have had several Neil Patrick Harris sightings reported in Montreal over the past few days.  The action/animated sequel to the 2011 hit film, which was set and filmed in NYC, is being filmed in Montreal but the movie’s plot is set in Europe.   Montreal is the ideal setting for Hollywood film makers.  Our beautiful city can resemble a modern North American City or an old European city.  This flexibility is very appealing to production houses. It is shaping up as a blockbuster year for Hollywood filming in Montreal.  Steven Speilberg is heading our way next year to shoot the film Robopocalypse, a 20th Century Fox /DreamWorks adaptation of the Daniel H. Wilson bestseller about a  robot uprising.  Also on his way to shoot in Montreal is disaster-epic master Roland Emmerich.  The Godzilla auteur will be in our neck of the woods to shoot the sci-fi movie Singularity. With these 3 films, 2012 might just be the biggest year ever for Hollywood filming in Montreal!!

Multimedia City!

Did you know that in Old Montreal there is a cluster of companies that make up what is called the “Multimedia City”?  These companies are in the field of 3D Animation, Video Games, Cinema, Special Effects, Graphic Design and much more!  The multimedia field is booming in Montreal, especially the Video Games industry.  There are more and more video games companies setting up shop in Montreal.  Montreal is now the number 2 destination in the world in this field after San Francisco.  The Quebec government has been a huge factor in this wave of video game companies.  In their hopes of increasing employment in our province, they have been providing these companies with grants to open a studio in our city.  Among the new video game studios in Montreal are Warner Brothers, THQ and Funcom.  Many more are expected to open in the near future.  Ubisoft is still one of the biggest video game companies in the world.  They employ thousands of people and are a big part of the Montreal community.  In addition to the video game industry, more and more motion pictures are being filmed in their entirety in Montreal.  We have the skilled workers in the field of special effects and animation in addition to a gorgeous city that can look like a modern American city or an old European town.
