Every year, the English language grows and changes. This year, one of the newest words in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is “selfie.” What does selfie mean?

According to the dictionary, it means “an image of oneself taken by oneself using a digital camera especially for posting on social networks.”

‘Selfie’ (noun) was definitely one of the biggest words of 2013 and 2014, with everyone from celebrities to students who study English for Academic Purposes in New York. What’s the first thing most students do when they first arrive in NY? Take a selfie!

Ahmed introduced us to an exciting toy which apparently is popular in Saudi Arabia, but we hadn’t seen before: The Selfie Stick!

If you want to take a picture of yourself in front of the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, or other New York landmarks, it can be difficult just using your arm! The Selfie stick will make your photos look great!

Other new words in the dictionary include ‘tweep’ (noun, someone who users Twitter) and hashtag (noun, the name for the # symbol on twitter and facebook, like #ecexperience)

Try using one of these new words in a sentence in class today and impress your teacher! They are official English words!
