ESL San Diego EC English Homework Club

ESL San Diego: EC English Homework Club

Calling all new and incoming EC San Diego students! Our Homework Club is live and back in action! Sometimes teachers will assign super difficult tasks that can make even the most studious of students suffer a headache. That’s exactly what Homework Club is for! The Club was started several years ago, originally called Guided Self Study (GSS), but it has always been the same: students in ESL San Diego classes with EC who need that extra bit of help can come find it, whatever it may be. So, bring your most difficult tasks, questions, problems and brains to Teacher Brian every Thursday at 2:15 to get some FREE extra help. All levels are welcome, and any subject is fair game. You just need to sign up at the front desk. And here’s a tip for all EC’s students: take your ESL learning OUTSIDE. Volunteer with EC San Diego to speak with San Diego local or have your hosts take you out for cultural excursions if you are staying in an EC San Diego Homestay. Even if you come to Homework Club to get extra help and make sure your homework is done correctly, you must still take the knowledge of English you gain here into the real world, and use it with real people. For example, one hundred grammar exercises on the Present Perfect vs. Past Simple still aren’t nearly as good as 1 hour of conversation and communication with a native English speaker. So get out there, and don’t be afraid to use your English!

ESL Student Testimonial: Laura Bazan!

Laura came to EC San Diego from her home country of Spain in November 2015. Last week was her very last week with us so we asked her to share her experiences of EC for ESL San Diego! “I have had here a great experience. The school is localized in the best place of San Diego. The staff is very kind and the school offers a lot of interesting activities like the volunteer opportunities, which is great, or free classes. Also, I liked that I could have different topics in the Special Focus classes, because they allow students to choose which class they see as more suitable for themselves. The teachers are good but there are some teachers that are great!! They helped me a lot, for example thank you Teacher Fay, she for me was the best one. Also John and Barbara helped me too much. Thank you to everyone at EC San Diego for my amazing experiences over the past six months!”

Our New Student Intern, Jiana!

Hello, I am Jian So (call me Jiana!) from South Korea. It has been about 3 months since I arrived in America. I have started to work as an intern at EC, a San Diego English Center, since March 28th. I am working as an assistant at the front desk arranging files, making flyers and so on. Come say hi to me anytime! It is very lucky for me to work at this beautiful place, La Jolla. We can see wonderful sea sights just in 5 minutes by walking from school. Also there are many nice places and restaurants to have dates with others. I am so excited because not only my career will be definitely supported, but my communication skills will improve when I continue to immerse myself in ESL San Diego. I don’t want to miss this perfect chance to grow. Thank you EC San Diego!

Meet ESL Student Intern Youjin!

Hi, everyone. I am Youjin Park, originally from Seoul, Republic of Korea. I started working at EC San Diego as a Student Services Intern from early March. I am in senior year (university), double majoring in Public Administration and Psychology in Korea. In 2014, I had a chance to study abroad and I chose going to Southern California to do ESL San Diego and enjoy the amazingly beautiful sunshine. I took two semesters in California State University Fullerton and went back to Korea. After I went back to Korea, I missed sunny California so badly so I tried to find a way to be here again. Finally, I got a chance to come back to So Cal as an intern! So far, I have met so many nice people while working at this amazing San Diego English Center. Thanks to my awesome coworkers, I became comfortable working here very quickly. Also, I met great students who came from all over the world. Dear Students, don’t hesitate to ask me if you have any questions because I am here to help you. <3

Cesar Chavez Day, March 31st

Cesar Chavez Day is tomorrow, March 31st! EC San Diego is off for this California-centric holiday. (Remember: school will be in session the next day, Friday April 1st). California is a culturally diverse state with a storied history, and Cesar Chavez is an important part of that history. Many of EC’s English Classes in San Diego incorporate lessons that support our mission to provide students with the best full immersion ESL program possible – including lessons on past and present California. Below is a brief description of Cesar Chavez: Cesar Chavez was one of the first Civil Rights Activists to stand up for worker’s rights in California, particularly the rights of immigrant workers. Because of his efforts, the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers union) became a reality in the 1970s, and still exists today. Chavez fought to protect the rights and freedoms of farm workers everywhere.

EC San Diego walking tour includes the local bus stop (Bus Number 30), the location of EC San Diego, La Jolla Cove, Scripps Park, and Bubba’s Smokehouse. Our staff will be available to assist you with any questions you may have upon arrival, and can give you the best information to make your English course in the USA a huge success!

Mastering English Classes in San Diego

The Graduating Class of Friday, March 18, 2016 celebrated the completion of their EC English classes in San Diego.  After marching in, the graduates walked up one-by-one to receive their certificates from EC San Diego’s Center Director, Martha Delgadillo. Once everyone received their certificates, Assistant Academic Director, Nick DiZinno, announced them official Graduates and they threw their caps in the air in celebration! Afterwards, they mingled, congratulated each other, and took photos with the friends they made while studying English at EC San Diego! We are proud of how far you’ve come, and we will miss you all! Congratulations on completing your English Classes in San Diego!

Student Testimonial – Joe from Korea

“When I first visited EC San Diego, I was relatively nervous compared to other journeys. Although I decided to speak English without any shy emotion, it wasn’t easy to speak in front of the people who I met first. A few months later, I passed the level test to the upper intermediate class. Every time that I moved up to a higher class, I felt my English skills were improving faster and faster. I met many different teachers. Some of them were funny and energetic and others were so knowledgeable. While I stayed in San Diego, my grammar has improved so much. Every time I use English, all the remarkable memories from EC San Diego touch my heart. If anyone ask me to go abroad, I’ll tell them ‘go to San Diego’.” -Wonjin (Joe), Student Ambassador “Wonjin (Joe) not only excelled in his studies, but also in his role as a student ambassador at EC.  Staff, teachers, and students could always count on Joe to help out when assistance was needed.  His passion for helping new students every Monday showed as he greeted new students and answered their questions about the school and also living in San Diego.  Joe’s real love is for cooking and he was always very generous with sharing his delicious dishes and treats at EC.  Joe’s leadership will be missed here at EC, but we are proud of his success and are confident that he will thrive in his future endeavors.  Also, we hope to see him back in San Diego someday soon.” -Autumn Garrett, Assistant Academic Director English Language Courses in the USA

Field Trip to the Natural History Museum

Last Tuesday Fay’s Pre-Advanced Class took a field trip to The Natural History Museum in Balboa Park! They walked through the Mayan Exhibit, because art has been the main topic in class. Afterwards, they dined at Parado Restaurant and strolled through the Balboa Park. It was a perfect day and everybody enjoyed it. Just another reason that EC San Diego is a perfect place to Learn English in the US!
