Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrating the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. All non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events.
Similar to other summer events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation’s heritage, laws, history, society, and people. Parades are often in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at places like parks, fairgrounds, or town squares. For private events, Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off. The first week of July is one of the busiest American travel periods of the year because many people use the holiday for vacation trips.
In San Francisco, 2012 Fourth of July celebration is held at pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf. It is from 2:00 pm to 11:00 pm on this Wednesday including performance of some local bands, the highlight is fireworks display at 9:30 pm.
