Canadian cuisine, which varies widely by region and its peoples, is not as popular outside of Canada. However, Poutine stands out as purely Canadian which puts us on the map of world foods. The provincial kitchens of European meals expanded after the subsequent waves of immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries. Despite the ability to identify some of the dishes as Canadian, it’s difficult to define a complete style of Canadian cuisine because of the cultural diversity. Poutine: Probably the most popular Canadian Dish. It first appeared in Quebec in 1950 and consists french fries, Cheese curds, gravy sauce and depending on the region, chicken or beef broth. Tourtière: A traditional meat pie thats also originally from Quebec. It’s made from fine chopped meat with onions and spices such as cinnamon and cloves. You can add vegetables or potatoes, often during Christmas celebrations, and can always be enjoyed throughout the year as well. Pâté Chinois: A delicious pancake made up of beef layers, creamy corn, and mashed potatoes. Nova Scotia Donair: Also called Maritime Donair or Halifax Donair, It’s a famous snack that includes hot beef in French bread, topped with tomatoes, onions, sweet milk sauce, garlic powder, sugar and vinegar. Pemmican: Soft, dried meat, mixed with fat, proteins and berries. Garlic Fingers: Pastries like pizza come with cheese, garlic and sometimes meat. Lobster Roll: Meat mixed with mayonnaise, served in a hotdog bun. Cipaille Pie consists of layers of fish and meat. With all the food mentioned, I bet you’re hungry now! To us, visiting the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is one of the MUST DO’S in Vancouver. It brings you close to nature and the height and beauty of the trees and cliffs are simply humbling. A big advantage is that you can take a free shuttle bus from Canada Place and it takes around 15 minutes to get there. Easy and simple! Entry to the park as a student costs $33.95. It’s totally worth it because the park itself has many things to see and do. People usually spend 4 hours inside. Upon entering the park, you walk along an exhibition that gives you information about the first nations people and the aboriginal culture of Canada. After that we went to the famous Suspension Bridge, which is 140 meters long and 70 meters high. The view is spectacular and amazing because its unique and one of a kind. On the other side of the River, there are places to drink, eat poutine, relax and unwind while also seeing the beautiful animals around the areas. Going back, you can also do the cliff walk. If you are scared of heights I wouldn’t recommend doing it because parts of the bridge are made out of glass and it can be scary. Moreover, the park is impressive and unique. You see the surroundings from a totally different point of view giving you an idea of being close to the nature and away from the big city.
