Sing a Song at EC Washington!

Learning English has never sounded so good!

Wow. I am typing up this blog from my office, which is located down the hallway from Classroom 6, where our fantastically creative teacher Yesenia is putting on another raucous workshop that combines English and Music. As I type, I can hear delighted chanting of famous American music lyrics emanating from the classroom, with a gang of ten students from varying levels and cultural backgrounds singing at the top of their lungs, filling the air with joyous laughter and building their confidence and developing their fluency!

Since Yesenia started this workshop a few months ago, it has become a highlight of our free academic workshops program, which all EC Washington students can enjoy as part of their courses. The content is varied from lesson to lesson, so one week students might be coming into contact with music they might not have ever heard of before (and teaching ESL students about the magic of James Brown is a true privilege of being in this school!) or the latest trending songs.

Music Class - May 30
Music Class – May 30

This week, I heard the students grooving to the American classic “I love Rock’n’Roll”, “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga, “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen, among others. This is not just an excuse to listen to music; students are challenged by deciphering lyrics and trying to fit them into the right rhythmic structure, forcing them to think about syllable spacing and pronunciation, while also learning a few new vocabulary words that they can shout out next time they’re out at a music show! The students who came yesterday, from Brazil, Ecuador, Korea, Colombia, Japan, and Switzerland, represented the diverse mix of nationalities that we welcome to classes at EC Washington.

You should come and check out this free workshop! Come any Tuesday or Thursday at 2:30pm for one hour and find out how you can Learn English as a Second Language in Washington while you’re here!
