Travel Vocabulary - Tell me your Plans

Average: 3.1 (30 votes)

Holiday season is fast approaching with many of us enjoying time off from school or work over the Christmas and New Year period. Some of us will be going back to our hometowns to visit family or perhaps taking a vacation. Personally, I'll be leaving Malta for two weeks to go back to my hometown, Cardiff in the  UK. I already have my plane tickets and I don't have to worry about hotels because I'll be staying with family. I can't wait!

Read through the paragraphs and complete them with the correct missing words. I recommend reading the whole paragrpah once, then reading it again while trying to choose the right vocabulary.

Confusing Words - Look, See, Watch and Listen & Hear

Average: 2.4 (29 votes)

Simple words are often easy to confuse.

Today I want you to explain to me the difference between look, see & watch and then listen & hear.

Use the comments section to explain the difference in meaning and give some example sentences. To get you thinking, I have created a ten-question quiz for you to try.

So who is going to be the first person to write a explanation?

I know you can do it!

Choose the missing word

Average: 3.1 (17 votes)

Here's a list of ten questions. Each question is missing one word. Choose the correct missing words and when you have finished give your own answers to the questions by leaving a comment.

I think today's activity is good for Intermediate level students. Who can get 10/10?

AWL -Academic Word List - G , H & J

The last time you tested yourself here on AWL vocabulary, the focus was on 'F' words. This time you'll see if you recognize how to use some words beginning with G, H, and J. (NB: There are so many 'I' words on the AWL that they will be part of a separate vocabulary activity.)

An English Poem

Average: 3.1 (18 votes)

On poetry

A couple of days ago we had a request for a lesson on poetry. I'm sure most of us have terrible memories of poetry-writing in school. I remember my teacher telling me to write a poem with no instructions on how to form one. "Just try" was her instruction...not very helpful. Can you imagine a piano teacher telling a student to "just try and play the piano' without any guidance on notes, keys or timing and expect a student to be magically able to play?

The Beatles - NOW sing English songs

Average: 3.8 (12 votes)

So it seems that there is a little disapointment that yesterday's exercise on singing songs in English did not actually include a song for you to sing. Let's put that right. Here is a classic Beatles song, suggested to us by Grivna, a regular user of this site (thanks, Grivna). The lyrics are included in the video.
