Mother’s Day

Sunday 14th March 2010 is Mother’s Day here in England, a whole day dedicated to the celebration of motherhood, and a chance for you to show how much you love and appreciate your wonderful Mum!  Get her a card and some flowers or wine or chocolate to show her how much you care.  Or you could take her out for lunch, or buy her tickets to her favourite show at the Theatre.  Don’t let her do any chores on Sunday - she must put her feet up and relax!  Whatever you get her, she will love it.  Just make sure she knows how special she is on this day of all days!

Thanks Mums, we love you!!

‘Guess Who…’ Competition

We are running a little competition in the EC cafeteria called ‘Guess Who…’  On the notice board near the till we have a display of pictures of some of our School Staff as they look now…and pictures of  how they used to look as babies!  Can you recognise them?  Use the Answer Forms provided to match the baby faces to the adult teacher faces, then post your answer form in the box provided in the cafe.  The first name drawn out of the box on Friday 19th March wins a dinner for two at Al Duomo’s restaurant! Get involved!

‘The History Boys’

The Theatre Royal (New Road) is proud to present Alan Bennett’s hugely successful play, ‘The History Boys,’ from 29th March to the 3rd April.  The play depicts the life of a group of intelligent and boisterous teenagers who are working to gain entry into the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities.  Hilarious, and a huge hit, the play was a sweeping success when it first opened in 2004.  See it for yourself at the theatre:  Buy tickets online using the website below, or pop into the Theatre Royal Box Office.  Be quick, the show is sure to sell out again!

Pub Spot: Open House

I want to tell you all about the best pub in Brighton: Open House! Situated in Springfield Road, and next to London Road train Station, the pub is easily accessible from the main Ditchling Road (26, 46 and 50 bus routes).  Open House is stylish yet relaxed, with a warm and welcoming community atmosphere.  Ok, I am slightly biased because I work there!  But this pub really is fabulous, and the food is amazing! We also have art for sale on every wall, and a Function Room upstairs ready for hire.  In the summer you can enjoy the very spacious and sunny beer garden, as well as various organised events throughout the year, including Folk and Blues Night, Cider Festivals, and the crazy celebrations for Gay Pride!  This pub is well worth a visit, so get yourselves down there! Any questions, just ask Charlotte in Reception!

The two Swedish interns

Hi guys!

This is Isabell and Hanna writing. We are the two girls who have been practising at EC for the last seven weeks. The reason why we came here is because we received a scholarship named Leonardo da vinci from our school back in Sweden. We are very grateful for this opportunity that was given to us and we have had a great time here in Brighton. We have been doing all kind of different tasks in the school but we’ve spent the most of our time at the accommodation office and in the reception. We have been doing everything from designing posters to calling host families. Now we got some experience about how it’s to working in a school and of course we have improved our English skills.

Our time here in Brighton is something that we always will carry with us. We have got to know a lot of new people from all over the world, and we really hope to meet some of them again. During our spare time we have been explored Brighton and also London of course. We think that Brighton is a cosy little town with all different kind of people, there’s something for everybody! Loads of clothes have been shopped and a lot of pubs and nightclubs have been visited. We have been living with some great guys in St James place and we have spent a lot of fun and crazy time together.

We came here without any expectations but we will leave with a lot of great memories. Thanks for everything!

Xx

Pancake Day!

16th February 2010 is Pancake Day, or ‘Shrove Tuesday.’  This day is traditionally a day of final feasting before entering the Christian penitential period of Lent the following day - ‘Ash Wednesday.’  Lent is a time for turning to God, and showing faith by fasting, or giving up certain indulgences.  Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday were a perfect way to use up any leftover rich food stuffs such as eggs, milk and sugar, which would have to be given up the next day.

Recipe:

110g/4oz plain flour, sifted

2 eggs

200ml/7floz milk mixed with 75ml/3floz water

50g/2oz butter

To serve: lemon juice, golden syrup, sugar, chocolate sauce

Sift flour and a pinch of salt into a mixing bowl.  Break eggs into a well in the middle of the bowl.  Whisk the eggs.  Gradually add water and milk mixture into the bowl, still whisking.  Whisk until mixture becomes a smooth batter.  Melt butter in a pan, then spoon some of it into the mixture.  Leave the rest of the butter in the pan to lubricate it.  Pour the batter into the hot pan.  Allow to cook for approximately 30 seconds, then flip over to the other side.  When fully cooked, serve with your favourite topping, then move onto the next pancake! Yummy!

Pub Crawl

I organised an impromptu pub crawl with some of the students last Friday night.  We explored some more pubs in Brighton that the students did not know so well, including the Font and the Pavilion Tavern.  See pictures below!

Chinese New Year

Wishing you all a very Happy Chinese New Year!

From the 14th February there will be 2 weeks of celebrations for Chinese New Year - 2010 is the Year of the Tiger.  Traditional celebrations for the New Year are always highly symbolic and significant.  The Dragon Dance combined with the loud beating of drums and the bang of firecrackers are believed to evict evil spirits.  Red clothes are often worn to ward off bad fortune.  Spending time with family is very important at this time of year, and reunion dinners are held, including the traditional consumption of chicken and fish.  Why not take a trip to China Town in London and partake in the festivities?
