Beautiful bright sunshine and blue skies greeted the EC London team as we woke up early on Sunday 27th June ready for our mystery marine adventure! We met at the Docklands Sailing Club at 10:00am, donned our life jackets and jumped aboard our respective dinghies for a fun-packed morning of learning how to sail. There was some concern regarding the lack of wind but luckily there was just enough to keep us moving, albeit slowly! Perfect conditions for some of us first-timers. After the sailing we had a delicious bbq lunch followed a trip to the pub to watch England play Germany in the World Cup. Sadly the day didn’t end quite as well as most of us had hoped but our German intern Stephanie was very happy! Thanks from all of us to Bernard for organising yet another excellent staff teambuilding event.

Coffee and conversation with Katie

By Mayerly Marquez, Intermediate 1pm

Last Thursday there were three of us (two students from Japan and myself from Venezuela) and we talked about ourselves and our countries and culture and the differences we had noticed between England and its culture and our countries.  For example, here people are more polite than in my country and stop to let people cross on zebra crossings. We also spoke about things that were happening in the News, for example that Michael Jackson’s death could have been homicide.

If you would like to join us for Coffee and Conversation (it’s FREE for EC students), come and sign up outside the Study Room.
Hope to see you soon to practise your speaking skills and meet new people from all over the world!

Coffee and Conversation with Christina

Last week I had the pleasure of holding two coffee and conversation classes in the EC cafe. I didn’t know who I would meet or what kinds of conversations to expect! In the first session I met a French student who is passionate about photography and loves London! She was having some trouble with her bank, which meant that she didn’t have access to any cash for the whole day. This didn’t stop her at all! Her plan for the afternoon was to walk down to the National Gallery and check out some FREE exhibitions, yes, in London most galleries have free exhibitions!!

We were later joined by two more students and we talked about their views of London. I was surprised to hear that they were a bit ‘bored’ outside of school. This surprised me as I have lived in London for 3 years and I still haven’t ever been bored! I suggested things to do in London, like visiting the markets at the weekend (Portobello, Brick Lane, Spittalfields, etc.) I also told the boys to buy Time Out Magazine which is a weekly paper that lists EVERYTHING that is happening in London that week. There is no way that anyone can get bored in a city like London with so much going on. As a famous author once said, When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”

I spent my second coffee and conversation session chatting to two Spanish girls who were making the most of their month in London! They had been out the night before
enjoying the London night life and were excitedly making plans for the weekend. We talked about the differences between London and Madrid - both cities are crazy and have a good night life! Apparently the London traffic is a bit crazier though. We couldn’t talk about the two countries without mentioning the differences in the weather, of course they preferred the sunny London weather to the rainy Spanish weather - hmmm, or was it the other way around??

Coffee and Conversation is held twice or three times a week in EC London’s Cafe - and it’s FREE! Sign up outside the Study Roomm :)

A wee wedding weekend (in Scotland)

I went to Scotland for the first time last weekend for a wedding and discovered much about the countryside, the culture and the language. The Highlands are spectacularly beautiful, the people are friendly and laugh a lot and the accent is not as difficult to understand as many people might think. I would certainly like to return to see more of the country and would definitely recommend a visit.

What do you think the following pictures represent about Scottish culture?
(The vocabulary focus below may be useful!)

Flash mob today in Trafalgar Square @ 6pm!

Have you seen the latest T-Mobile advert? The one with all the people dancing in Liverpool Street Station?  This was an example of a flash mob and there may be one today in Trafalgar Square at 6pm (according to a radio station this morning).

If you don’t have any other plans, why not turn up? It could be fun!

A flash mob (n.count):

a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.

Party launch is huge success!

The launch of the new English UK weekly student party last night was a huge success with over 650 names on the guest list! EC London students and staff met at Waxy O’Connors for drinks then were driven in style to Orchid nightclub in the EC branded rickshaw. We all then proceeded to dance the night away, stopping occasionally to relax in the VIP area reserved exclusively for EC London. Highlights were Pierre-Vincent buying everyone champagne, Abdullah & Sami’s dance-off and Andac doing his classic party photo poses for the camera! Contact Laura B at EC London to get your name on the guest list for the next party night…
