How long should I study English in Malta?

The right English course in Malta length depends on your current level, your goals, and how much progress you want to make. As a general guide:

  • 2–4 weeks is suitable for students looking to refresh their English, build confidence, or prepare for a trip or job interview
  • 1–3 months gives enough time to develop consistent fluency and move up at least one proficiency level
  • 6 months or more is recommended for students seeking significant, measurable progress. For example, student preparing for university study, career progression, or internationally recognised exams

EC Malta offers English courses with a minimum stay of one week, and longer-stay options including an Academic Year programme of 24 weeks or more for students committed to deep immersion.

Can beginners study English in Malta?

Yes. EC Malta accepts students of all English levels, from complete beginners to advanced. Students take an online placement test before arrival so that, on their first day in school, they can be placed in a class that best matches their current level. EC Malta has numerous classes running all year, with new courses starting every Monday. Teachers monitor students’ progress throughout their course so students can move up a level when the time is right. Students can also track their own progress on EC’s MyEC app.

Is Malta a good place to learn English?

Yes. English is one of Malta’s official languages and is widely spoken, making it a great place for immersive learning. Malta is small, which makes it easy to explore and see the sights. People from all over the world live in Malta and use English to communicate. Even though Malta is very international, students enjoy discovering its rich culture and history. There are many unique towns and villages to visit, and plenty of local Maltese food to try (Maltese cuisine is an interesting mix of Mediterranean and North African flavours).

Apart from Ireland, Malta is the only EU country where English is an official language. And because of its EU status, EU students can use their Euros and even look for part-time work! In fact, some non-EU students may also be eligible to study and work in Malta. It all depends on your nationality, course and the length of your stay. Be sure to check with the embassy in your home country for the latest visa information.

Malta’s sunny weather, clear seas, and outdoor lifestyle make it a great place to learn English and have a memorable experience abroad. Diving and water sports are very popular activities in Malta. For nightlife, St. Julian’s, Sliema, Paceville and Valletta are popular locations when the sun goes down. Here you will find restaurants, bars and nightclubs, whatever your taste.

In Malta, especially in summer, you can experience ‘festas’. These village festivals. Each village and town has its own festival where the community comes together to celebrate with fireworks, processions and music. Santa Marija, celebrated on 15th August, is the biggest festa and is celebrated in different localities, with Mosta’s being one of the most popular.

Malta International Airport has direct flights to many European cities and other destinations. Since Malta is small, getting to and from the airport is usually quick and easy.

Malta is a good place to learn English because it’s a popular destination for studying. There are many language schools across the Maltese islands, so they have extensive experience hosting international students. Most English schools in Malta provide accommodation (which can be tricky to find, especially in summer) and have full social programmes, so you will always have something to do after school and on the weekends. And because Malta is such a popular study-abroad destination, you can make friends with students from all over the world. To make sure you are learning at a quality Maltese English school that is a member of FELTOM. consider FELTOM (Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta), which represents 14 language schools in Malta and Gozo and provides high-quality English courses for international students.

Student life in Malta

Malta has a well-established international student community, particularly in and around St Julian’s, where EC Malta is located. The area has a beach, restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops within walking distance of the school. Spinola Bay is close by and is also a popular place for an evening out. Malta’s public bus service connects students to towns across the island, and the cost of eating out, socialising, and travelling locally is lower than in most Western European cities. Learning English in Malta is more cost-effective than taking an English course in the UK or Ireland. Malta’s size means students spend less time commuting and more time enjoying life!

Exploring the Maltese Islands

Malta is the largest of three inhabited islands that make up the Maltese archipelago. Gozo, the second largest, is a short ferry ride from the main island and is known for its quieter landscape, historic citadel, and diving sites. Gozo is a popular weekend destination for EC students. Comino, the smallest of the three, is home to the Blue Lagoon, one of the Mediterranean’s most visited natural swimming spots. The three islands look and feel different, so students can enjoy environments without long-distance travel or overnight stays.

Studying English in Malta as an EU Student

Malta is one of the most accessible English-speaking study destinations for European students. Malta is one of only two EU countries where English is an official language, making it a practical and cost-effective destination for European students. EU citizens don’t need a visa to study in Malta and can use Euros on their trip. Depending on nationality, course type, and length of study, some students may also be eligible to work in Malta. Because English is an official language and Malta has a large international workforce, many student jobs are available without requiring Maltese, particularly in hospitality and tourism.

English language learning standards in Malta

Malta’s English-language school sector is one of the most developed in Europe and is regulated by FELTOM (Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta). FELTOM membership requires schools to meet defined standards in teaching quality, student welfare, and facilities. EC Malta has held FELTOM accreditation for many years. Accreditation means you can be confident that your English course in Malta meets recognised quality benchmarks. This is an important point when choosing a language school in Malta.

When is a good time to take an English course in Malta

Malta has over 300 sunny days, one of the highest totals in Europe. Its Mediterranean climate of mild winters and warm summers makes it a great study destination year-round. This is great for English language students because social activities, excursions, and outdoor interactions are possible year-round. English students arriving in autumn or winter find the same outdoor lifestyle that makes Malta a special study-abroad destination.

Malta is a great place to explore Europe

Malta is very well connected to the rest of Europe and the world. Malta International Airport operates direct flights to major cities across Europe, including London, Milan, Paris, Frankfurt, and Madrid. Many non-European students arrive in Malta on direct flights from Istanbul and Dubai. Students on long English courses love that they can get away to another country for the weekend. The Maltese Island’s small size also means the airport is easily accessible from anywhere in Malta in 30 to 45 minutes. Students who combine a language course with European travel find Malta’s transport links a real advantage over comparable Mediterranean destinations.
