Student testimony - Dmitry Kireev

Dmitry Kireev

1. How long have you been at EC Malta?

I have been there for 2 weeks.

2. Would you recommend EC Malta and why?

Yes, I would. I think that school is quite good, process of studying is dynamic, teachers are friendly. Also Malta is good for relaxing. Weather is good, sea is clean. There are are a lot of places to places to visit and many people, with whom it is very interesting to to communicate.

3. What do you like about Malta?

Many things. Climate is warm, there is a lot of sun. There are a lot of old places, such as Valletta, Mdina. People are very friendly.

4. What do you like about the school?

I really like our teachers. It was easy for me to understand them. We speak a lot in our lessons. Our group was good. There were many people from different countries: Russia, Spain, Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland. Some school activities were really interesting.

5. What do you like about your course?

I think it was really dynamic. We didn’t use our books, we just spoke a lot, made many vocabulary exercises. For me it was more useful, because I started to speak easier.

6. Where is your favourite hang out in the evenings?

Maybe it was Paceville. I visited it few times and really enjoyed it. Loud music, many people…

7. What was your favourite EC Activity?

Gozo. I visited it on Saturday. It was a long trip. We went to Gozo by bus and ferry boat. I was tired a bit. But I also had a lot of positive emotions.

8. What type of accommodation did you book?

I booked a room in a hotel. It was comfortable, but expensive. I had air conditioning in my room. I also had breakfast and dinner.

9. What do you like best about your accommodation?

Dinners were good. Tasty dishes and good service.

10. Would you come back to EC Malta or another EC Centre?

Maybe. Who knows? It would be interesting to visit another EC school in USA and the UK.

11. Do you have any recommendations for future EC Students?

Try to be more independent. Enjoy your free time. Try to communicate more with students from other countries, not just with friends from your country. I think that for studying English it is better to visit Malta without company from your country.

EC Student letter to a teacher

Dear Francis, I would just like to say that without your belief in me and help in building up my confidence then my TOEFL score would not be 103. You and Simon have been so encouraging and I have learnt not only English but also about myself as a person and what I am capable of achieving when I put mind to it. My whole experience in Malta and at EC has been a very eye opening experience, I have cried and laughed, made friends and discovered. It was not what I was expecting and I will very much miss everyone I met. I will talking about EC and Malta for a very long time. I wish all my other friends on your course good luck and happy times, and I know they are in safe hands and will be in high spirits when they get their TOEFL results. Please say hello to all the students of the TOEFL class! Thank you for preparing me for this exam.

EC MALTA PHOTOGRAPHY LECTURE

Writing Task by Student Natalia Pirkhodko, Germany

Sliema. Ca. 8 o’clock in the evening. I am standing on the seaside and enjoying the wonderful view of the bay and the opposite coast. What a beautiful sunset! “An excellent moment to take a photograph for the writing task on the photography”, comes to my mind. Fortunately, I have my camera with me. As Mr. Govis told us, such photographs have to be taken in the right moment since as soon as the sun goes behind the clouds, the lights lose their brightness, the moment is gone and the impression is lost. Of course, I do not want to lose this opportunity. I take out my camera while calling to mind all the rules Mr. Govis taught us during the lecture. One of the simplest rules which have stuck to my memory is “less is more”. Now I am beginning to understand the real meaning of this rule: there is nothing special in the view of the bay – just the sky, the clouds and the sea – but the way these components suit and supplement each other creating a picturesque visual appearance is a tremendous one. And I know if I take the photo immediately, it will look exactly the way it does now and fascinate the viewer. But I want more… I want to make the photo tell a story and embody a part of myself. I want the viewer to see exactly what I see in the photo. So I move my camera and choose the right angle so that the sunshine is now reflected in the water creating a kind of a visual pathway the viewer can follow watching the image. Of course, I am aware of the rule of thirds and place the horizon line not in the centre but a little bit lower as I want to focus the viewer’s attention on the clouds and the sun. A little ship on the left is a nice addition and makes the whole view livelier. So everything is perfect now… I choose a portrait format and press the button. My picture is taken now and I wish the viewers a nice journey into the fascinating world of photography.

EC MALTA Student Letter

As the old saying goes the proof is in the pudding. (if you’re not sure what it means check with your teacher). Time multiplied by effort, add some desire and you’ve got the basic ingredients for success. Success that many of our students has achieved. At E.C. the teachers put the students first and that doesn’t mean we do it for you; nothing of any worth is ever easy to gain, sometimes it’s an uphill struggle and we will give you the tools to climb your mountains, and when you get to the top you can enjoy your ‘’pudding’’. Below is an example of a recent comment and results from E.C. Malta’s TOEFL class.

Francis Dobbin
Teacher

Dear Simon, Dear Francis,

I hope you are fine. Being back in Germany was quite strange. I think I miss the construction work in Malta and a little bit the beach. :) I promised to inform you about my TOEFL-Score.

My Score is 103 points, Reading 25, Listening 28, Speaking 23, Writing 27. I was very surprised, but happy, too, because I had a bad start in the speaking section (my problem from the start: meat and potatoes, time and my nerves)
So I want to say thank you for your good support and teaching. I think it was  very helpful for me to do the course with you to get into the task. Personally, I should have practice the speaking questions more.

Nevertheless it was an impressive time for me and I learned a lot, not only how to prepare myself to the TOEFL, but how to organise myself in a better way. You remind me to some important things in life, which I had forgot,  put aside or have not realised before.   Thank you Francis.

The good and regular practice in reading, listening and writing and the fact, that you recognize and work on our grammar problems, helped me a lot. It was a good experience to talk with you about Malta and general issues. Thank you Simon.

Maybe we will meet again and I book a another course at EC.

All the best
Benjamin Reis

EC MALTA Student Work Shops!

‘How to write right’
Student: Thomas Habl - Germany

Writing task: A report

To: Education authorities in Malta

From: Thomas Habl

Subject: Recommendation Malta IEC as a language holiday destination

Date : 7th May 2010

Purpose: The purpose of this report is to recommend Malta EC School as a perfect language school for foreign students.

Facilities: In EC School there are many facilities e.g. Internet café, café chat, free lessons, welcome dinner. In the Internet café, there are more than 30 computers with free Internet. You can also take your own notebook with you and join WIFI. Unfortunately, the Internet is very often cut off but I think that is a general problem in Malta. In my opinion, the café chat is very recommendable because you have the opportunity to talk to many different people from foreign countries. I am convinced that the free lessons like “how to write right” are en excellent opportunity to improve English skills. Another interesting point to improve the English skills is the welcome dinner on the first day of school. There you can enjoy a 3 course-meal in the ambiance of a traditional Maltese farmhouse and you can talk to many other students. All students have also the chance to borrow books from the library of the school. So you can read a book in your free time for example.

Activities: There are also many activities, like parties, welcome dinner or excursions to Gozo. Every week there are many parties in different bars and discos e.g. Footloose or Hugo’s where you can meet a lot of students from different countries. So you are automatically forced to speak English with the other students. The students have also a great chance to improve their language skills by visiting different excursions like Gozo or Blue Grotto.
Staff: The staff at EC School is very friendly and helpful. The lessons make the students happy because the lessons are totally different compared with the former school lessons in my home country. EC School is also very well organized.

Conclusion: In view of the above mentioned facts, I feel that Malta EC School can be recommended as an ideal place to study English.
