“My Favorite Place” - EC New York English School

A great example of student work:
2008_05_17_0206katia
My grandmother’s house is my favorite place but this place doesn’t exist anymore, but in my head it still exists.

When I say that it is my favorite place, it is because my childhood was there and I have good memories. My grandmother’s house was a small house. There was one living room, one bathroom, one kitchen and two bedrooms, but my bothers and I always slept with my grandmother in the same bed. It was amazing because every night my grandmother told a story for us but never finished the story. We waited for another day, anxious to know the end of the story.

By the way, in this place there was a big space to play with red sand and we were always dirty and my grandmother got angry with us and gave us a shower with a hose and we liked it.

It was a great time in my life and I’ll never forget it because it’s the best way to remember my childhood and my grandmother without crying.

“Two Stupid Robbers” - A Short Film

A few weeks ago, Enes’ intermediate class decided to create their own representation of a story found in their textbook.  While studying a unit on Crime, the students found a silly tale about two very dumb robbers.  Please enjoy their enactment!

EC NEW YORK goes to BROADWAY

It's okay to take pictures from the outside...

I confess!

I confess that I’ve organized social activities that both ESL teachers and ESL students could enjoy together.

When the Broadway revival of HAIR was announced this past winter, I quickly bought 25 tickets at the discounted group sales rate.

I eventually brought four teachers and 20 students to share the experience of this amazing musical.

HAIR is over 40 years old and nearly twice as old as our average student. However, all the teachers were familiar with the show because it’s a classic.

Back in 1968, the show shocked audiences with its loud rock & roll music, crazy humor, and controversial story about young people living free.

Many students were not familiar with the play; they were worried it would be old fashioned.

“It’s from the 1960s! We weren’t born until the 1980s!” they said.

I laughed and said, “HAIR is not for kids!
“Get ready to party!”

After the show, the students came forward to tell how they felt about this wild rock & roll musical.

Nagisa said, “I loved the costumes and the music. I was able to enjoy the show even when the English was tricky.”

Takako also liked the show. She explained, “The play made me wish I had lived in the 1960s.”

Jeongwon was really impressed. “Now I can understand why American art is great.”

Theater critics in newspapers and magazines have also loved this revival of HAIR.
