Maltese Traditional Wear

Tue, 08/04/2008 - 07:56

The ‘Ghonella’ (pronounced as ‘awn-nel-la’) or ‘Faldetta’ is a large black silk shawl, or hooded cloak, and was part of the Maltese women’s Sunday best outfits and uniquely, the national costume until the mid twentieth century. It covered the head in a sort of stiff, starched frame made out of board, cane or whalebone, leaving the face uncovered. From the sixteenth century onwards, noble women and women from more affluent families often wore white or brightly coloured ‘għonnielen’.

A new teacher—A new Story: Sarah!

Thu, 03/04/2008 - 10:08

Sarah Jones might be the most common name in Britain, but there is nothing common about Sarah Jones, one of EC Cape Town’s great new teachers. She came to Cape Town just to stay for a month and ended up staying for good. Easy to understand since Cape Town seems to be the perfect place to live for Sarah. She doesn’t only love the sound of the ocean but is also willing to spend her last penny for good food – something we have plenty of in our city. With a bachelor’s degree in politics and sociology she came from London to South Africa.

Boat Race

Tue, 01/04/2008 - 10:53

Commiserations to Cambridge and congratulations to Oxford for their big win in the 154th Boat Race.  The Cambridge team came in a full six lengths behind the much stronger Oxford team who were out for revenge after last year’s loss. Rebecca Dowbiggin Cambridge’s female  cox stated ,"We threw everything we had at them in the first half of the course because we knew we had to do that on the Surrey station and unfortunately it didn't pay off this year." Nevermind, there’s always next year.
